I can't install the Hardball Viewer on my system.
I created a temp file on C drive (not desktop).
When run, setup.exe copies 7 files, and then displays an error:
'several files on the system are outdated. Click OK to update them now.
After clicking OK, the system reboots, and I try setup again, but get the same message.

Any ideas?

Win2k (Service Pack3 plus various critical security updates).
[I can't use Service Pack4 because of various bugs which affect my computer usage]
Windows installer version 2
First-time install of hardball viewer.

What you see is called Windows File Protection.
Read more here:
http://labmice.techtarget.com/windows2000/FileMgmt/WFP.htm
You may disable it temporarily, install Hardball Viewer and enable File Protection back, just donā't tell anyone I told you to do itā... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

"The best fighters I met in combat were the American P-51 Mustang and Russian Yak-9U. Both of those types obviously exceeded all Bf109 variants in performance, including the 'K'. The Mustang was unmatched in altitude performance, while the Yak-9U was champion in rate of climb and maneuverability."

Weird. I thought Admin could do anything to anything!? First time I've encountered this.

I'd really like to know why hardball's viewer requires a security measure to be disabled for it to install.

Anyway, I made the registry edit, and will try to install again now. Thanks.

EDIT: Nope. Didn't work. Still get the same message. Has anyone else managed to get this program installed on Win2k? I think Hardball's choice of installer is suspect! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For anyone else who has the described install problem, my current workaround is just to extract the hardball CAB file to a folder and run the executable from there. Note that I did this after running 'setup.exe', which may have copied necessary files to my Windows directory.

It seems to work fine, although I was expecting some flight model graphs like the 'il2 compare' program. 27 mb seems alot just for a database GUI, so maybe I'm missing some features by not doing a proper install?

The program has over 120 little .jpg screenshots. That's what takes up all the space on your hard drive.

Another reason is that in order to get the OK from Oleg to use the data I had to promise to hard-code it into the data so nobody could copy & paste it. That makes for a HUGE amont of code - over 11,000 lines, or in other words almost 200 pages of a MS Word document.

With regard to the installer I used the one that came with MS Visual Basic 6. That's all I had to work with. VB is a little buggy, although some options that didn't work in the old version (VB5) work now. So I guess it would figure that MS would break something else...

Antifreeze - thanks for info on the fix; there's another guy at Netwings that had the same problem, so I'll tell him to come here.

Hi, I'm having the same problem as antifreeze. However, when I tried running the setup1.exe from the extracted CAB file, I get a 'invalid command-line parameters' message. Any suggestions?
Thanks http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Wow... thanks for your response FltLt Hardball.
Info straight from the source! I understand now why it's large. Kudos! Salut!

Mattiflaps, I didn't run the setup1.exe file.
Just extract all the files from the CAB to the folder that you would have liked to install into, and create a shortcut to 'HardBall's Aircraft Viewer for AEP.exe'.

That should get you up and running with this fine piece of FB software.

That's caused by a Windows compatability issue. You've fixed it now, but this would have worked, too:
a: Right-click on the "setup.exe" file and select 'Properties';
b: Select the 'Compatibility' tab;
c: Check the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:', and select "Windows 98".

It might be useful for anyone else who has this problem.

Thanks Hardball, I saw that in the readme, but there is no compatibility tab in file properties on windows2000pro (at least not in mine!).

Thanks for a top utility!
