Hi, all. Just today I was browsing through the PC games at the local store, and I came across IL-2. I know that the forgotten battles is out, but I was wondering if anyone still playes the first IL-2 online. I was curious about it, because I would really like to play against people online. On the other hand, I am skeptical about buying it, if no one plays anymore. Does anyone know if anyone still plays it, and where it might be played online? I'm quite new to it, so I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,
SkyPiece

Hey, the answer would be essentially none.

As of 6:45 pm CST there were two players in Hyperlobby playing IL-2 Sturmovik.

I think there are still people around playing the original but not too much. I would advise you to buy forgotten battles because it should be at the same price like the original Il2. And there's nearly everything included from 'old' Il2 except the campaigns. You will find a lot more people playing Forgotten Battles online..

IL2 is nice but most people are on FB. Plus thye IL2 engine is not as good as FB IMO. It is good... very good... but the new maps ansdd plane sets make FB an overall better sim IMO.. and i think the FMs are a bit better in FB and so are the graphics. Unless you just have some money to spend and like to collect sims skip IL2 and get The Aces Expansion GOLD pack.. then patch it up to the latest version... 2.2 I think... or soon to be 2.2. Ive been out of the loop for a few weeks. I miss my computer almost as much as I miss my family.

true, Il2 is a bit old in the tooth, but the teeth it has are still pretty sharp.

And, you can really pack the planes in if you have decent equipment. A rig that plays IL2-FB ACE well, will scream with Il2.

I loaded up original IL2 with my new 9800Pro card and an XP2000 and I got great performance. Everything maxed, at 32 colour and lots and lots and lots of action all over with good frame rates.

You'd need an AMD 64 CPU with a GeForce 6800 and a gig of top shelf RAM to get equivalent FPS in IL2-FB ACE.

You won't need that much power when putting the landscape details to excellent. Only the "perfect" mode chwes up that much cpu power. In excellent mode you'll get real high fps compared to perfect mode.

a few points:

- the boxed original needs patching or you will be missing nearly half the add-on planes

- if you wind the FB graphics back to roughly what IL2 offered the two games will run on similiar machines

- no-one plays the original online much anymore so its more an option for single player gaming these days

- some people actually prefer the first IL2 as the original planes are trickier to fly .. i am not going to get into any arguments about which is "more historical" but FB flight models are definitely more forgiving for new players without "flying on rails" like CFS3 does

IL2 died becuz FB+AEP is the whole stuff that 1C created and patched since release of IL2.It`s no use playing IL2 cuz you`d be heading reverse in 2 years.

comon, lets talk about that agin. The old IL2 FM was the best. lol There used to be kids on the forums wondering why they couldn't even take off. Only a few were real aces back then.

haha .. I remember that well .. the 109 was almost impossible to get in the air before the first patch came out for the original Il2(unless you had rudder pedals and never ever tried to pick up a wing drop on take off with stick )

its still important, if someone is thinking of buying the original IL2, that they be made aware the flight models (especially unpatched) are far less forgiving and things like spin recovery much harder than the are in the newer game

Great game the original IL2 - on UBI.com there is a separate lobby - with a few people that play - but if players are fanatic enough to play on line, they inevitably migrate up to the latest greatest version of the software.
