What is the cartridge case length and the weight of the projectile? How many grains of propellant in the case? What type of primer is used on nearly all 5.56 cartridge cases (not looking for a brand name here)? Where did the term "ball" come from when describing the projectile? What is the more commonly used term for "ball"?

What is the muzzle velocity of the 5.56 NATO round when leaving an M16a2 barrel? Howbout leaving an M4 barrel?

Don't go on the net and look this stuff up, just off of the top of your head please. We're counting on your honesty.

What weapon system is the base for the Mk. 48 Mod 0? Which weapon does it look most like. Also what branch of service is respnsible for that kind of naming system? Also what is the LSS and what will it replace?

You're getting into the realm of fantasy or very limited test weapons. In keeping w/the spirit of this post even though those weapons are being developed to hopefully sell to the military, they really aren't a fair question because byt the time that you read this post you'd have to ask what a Mk48 Mod1. I know that pretty much everyone knows what the G11 is but it's not going to be issued so it really doesn't fall under the category "military".

On a side note: Whats a Stoner 63 and who was it made by? It saw limited production but it was issued to what spec ops group?

Cartridge case length is 45mm. Standard weight is 62 grains, up from 55.

Depending on type of propellant you'll have between 23 and 25 grains of ball "spherical" powder. Incidently, Winchester makes most of the military ball powder for the 5.56 round.

Boxer primers, they are pushed in from the back and use one flash hole in the bottom of the cartridge case to transfer the flame from primer ignition. Boxer primers were originally made by a Brit. Boxer primed ammo is easy to pop the used primers out of and reload. Berdan primers were made by an American, they have 2 flash holes. Most combloc ammo is Berdan primed. Most reloaders throw out Berdan primed ammo because it is a pain in the neck to reload.

Ball actually came about from muzzle loaders, the projectile was a lead ball. When the Minie ball was invented for muzzle loaders it improved accuracy. It was shaped like modern FMJ rounds. A FMJ pistol round is also called "ball". It kind of stuck and some of the old timers call anything that is FMJ "ball ammo".

Muzzle velocity for a 55 grain FMJ is around 3250 fps (feet per second) from a 20 inch barrel (M16). With a 62 grain penetrator round (NATO green tip) figure on 3100 from the same barrel length. When going to a real M4 you will drop 600-700 fps from it's 14 inch barrel. A civilian M4 (CAR-15) typically has a 16 inch barrel and will gain a couple hundred fps over the 14.

Yeah good point about those questions. Probably atleast one will be around in the next few years though considering how old the M60 is getting plus the fact that even the newer versions can't keep up with whats currently available on the market.

The Stoner 63 was a weapons system that was convertible for different missions. It was made by Eugene Stoner of AR15-M16 fame. In Vietnam it was used by the Seals. You could interchange different groups to make different weapons, from Assalt Rifle to Squad Automatic Weapon. It was reliable in the jungle and the Seals primarily used it as a SAW. It would put down a huge rate of fire and was in 5.56x45 caliber, like the M16. It was eventually replaced by the FN Minimi (M249). There wasn't much demand for a service wide 5.56 caliber support gun until the Minimi came along. The M60 was typically carried.

Depends on whats issued. The NATO green tip ammo has a steel penetrator core but what troops in the field are finding is it zips completely thru the enemy and it takes up to 5 shots to drop them.

so uh, when would you use a green tip round effectively? against light armored vehicles? no...well maybe... against sandbag bunkers? probably... unarmored vehicles? probably... people in body armor? possibly?

Can anyone explain why caliber is used to measure a rounds diameter yet it's also used to measure the length of a barrel?

XyZspineZyX
08-08-2003, 05:20 PM
I don't remember exactly the mathematics involved, but measuring barrel length by calibre is used primarily by naval guns now. It has to do w/diameter of the round versus barrel length in a mathematic formula.

It's simply the length of the barrel divided by the diameter of the round, and it's written (for instance) like this: L/12 (if the barrel is 12 times the calibre)

One of ours is 3rd Bn Rangers and he said that the ammo sux hard, so they train to shoot till the target drops, then give 'em some more. As far as taking what ammo, it's hard to predict what the enemy will be wearing. If they took both kinds of ammo I doubt that changing ammo types in a firefight is a good idea.

i guess they would choose ammunition by theater. Like I doubt third world inhabitants would be wearing kevlar, so then they would bring ball. but if they went up against a developed country's main force, then SS-109 all the way.
