with a little research i have managed to track down the reason for some of the erratic behaviour of track-ir on some systems

typically the trackir will either stop at random or on some systems fail to be recognised at startup and need reinstalling every time you reboot

according to the official web-site track-ir draws heavy current from the USB port and can have problems with an under-spec USB port or HUB

however .. it would seem that this problem is made worse by other heavy current USB devices including FFB joysticks, USB optical mice, scanners and printers.

furthermore USB hubs that do not have a separate powerpack will make the problem worse

the solution .. put heavy current devices on other hubs and use powered hubs

Ok, that makes sense. I have wondered why it behaves so irregular sometimes. Thought it was a malfunctioning track IR device. Thanks!

Good suggestion.

I use a powered hub and have:
trackir
x45
ms ffb2

plugged into it.

But, I assume I don't have as much problems because it's powered.

Would be interesting to purchase another powered hub and run the joysticks off those.

i found putting the optical mouse back into the PS2 port and moving the FFB stick to a different hub from the trackir helped a lot

The most recent TrackIR drivers have a fix I've never seen before in the instructions:

It involves unplugging the USB and leaving it unplugged for 30 seonds, then plugging it back in and leaving it alone for 30 seconds (check the troubleshooting section in the pdf manual, I'm doing this from memory).

My point, TrackIR was acting very erratically, sometimes working, sometimes not. I tried this fix and it works smoothly all the time.

My opinion of TrackIR hasn't changed since it was introduced: It is the coolest thing that ever happened to flight sims BUT the designers made it far more complicated than it ever needed to be. The simple example in the back of the manual for setting up an enhanced flight sim profile is all anyone needs. All those other adjustable features are just inviting frustration. And every new version has more things to adjust.

Much to be said for KISS: Keep it Simple, Stupid.
