Hello,

I've been doing some research into the new maps that will be presented in a new addon. I noticed there's a Normandy map in the making? Sounds great, but what do we need the B-17 for then? Germany can't be represented on that map because it would turn out to be even larger than the Finnish map, which is already the biggest map around. I've come to the discovery that it's only possible to reach the most western German cities, coming from the eastern British coast, when a map is as big as the finish map, such as Dusseldorf, K├┬Âln, etc., flying over the northern part of belgium and the southern part of the netherlands. Is there any such map in the making, concerning the B-17 that's going to arrive? Or are b-17 II the mighty eighth scenario's out of the question?
Very curious... would be awesome. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm not sure that I understand 100%.

Are you wondering what the relevance of a B-17 on a Normandy map is?

Or are you pointing out that hsitorically, the B-17s wouldn't be bombing Normandy for more than one day (B-17s bombed the beaches and defenses, both to destroy German emplacements and to cut obstacles/create instant foxholes for the assault force)?

Or are you concerned that there is no 'classic' long range strategic bombing target like factories on a Normandy map?

I would like to see German maps other than Berlin, so that long range B-17 missions can be implemented.

I doubt you'll see maps bigger than the Finland map in the current sim. The method used for modelling maps in this game uses a lot of memory, with the Finland map being big enough to stretch most sytems as it is. If you made it only 20% bigger in each dimension, you'd need roughly 44% more memory to load the map. Not practical I'm afraid.

Of course you may be correct Tully, but it may be that the 'Normandy' map could be larger than the Finland map. I think with the release of 'the patch' we will see an overall increase in performance, and even an increase in terrain performance (I now am comfortable flying in Perfect settings over Leningrad with my PIV1.8/GF3 with the leaked patch). Of course there is no knowing.

Then entire start of the B17 daylight campaign focused on targets in France.. it was quite a while before they ventured to Germany..

Actualy,
We have already created a Battle of the Bismarck sea Multiplayer Online Coop for the - Empire of the Sun Scenarios - for the Japanese Zero release into FB.

We will find the B-17 quite usefull for this particular Coop because they where used to Bomb the Japanese convoy enroute to Lae harbour, as well as the smaller US Navy and Australian lighter Bombers that attacked the convoy at lower levels.
The Japanese convoy was protected by a CAP of Zeros.

Historical Note; Saburo Sakai was the first Japanese pilot to shoot down a B-17 Bomber in the Pacific with a Zero.

Why not an irregular shaped map for the bombing then? Make a map of Germany with only a small strip that goes to the bomber bases?
