Hi all. Despite the slew of spamtards oozing from my home site, I'd really like to get some input on this.

I have ALLWAYS flown on 56k. Since IL2 days even. I am about to get my first high-speed internet access installed next week and I wanted to know how to adjust.

I have NEVER flown with more then 12 people due to the connection, and so have no idea what some GOOD servers are these days.

I haven't even been online at home in three months, so I am totally out in the dark here.

It will be like starting completely over and I guess it will be a whole new ballgame flightwise.I am looking for some good ground-attack missions, as I am primarily still a Ground pounder.

On the tech level, do I need to adjust my firewall settings in HL once I switch over?
And what DL speed should I set in the Setup.exe? I had read something in here a LONG time ago that I should keep my settings at 28.8k because that was the "ideal" setting for data transfer for HL. Is that still relivant?

Anything else I may be forgetting? As I say, I am a total nOOb when it comes to this. I expect a good handfull of you out there have some kind of high-speed internet, and I greatly appriciate any input.

Thank you all up front for your time.

Oh what bitter, cold bite of steel shall a man make.

Just saw yer post BC. As for your firewall which one do you have? If it's ZoneAlarm, it will ask you if it's ok to open for the connection. Just say yes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif and that goes for any internet connection you want and trust. Any others, just say No.

If you use MSN Instant Messenger for one on one voice you need to adjust ZoneAlarm to medium to get the connection.

Oh, once you run broadband, you'll never go back to dialup again. I love mine, no matter what the cost. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Just be prepared to dowload things just for the heck of it. Broadband spoils you. You are warned...Happy downloading http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

There's no big preparations to do for broadband MP. Just connect and enjoy your low ping number. Doesn't matter much wether you set it at 14, 28 or cable. Congrats on the upgrade and smooth flying ahead.

COOLNESS!!!! You will never go back to dial up. It is a shame that they charge so much for cable considering that it is almost a necessity now. You would think that to make it even more accessible and thereby increase thier profits they would drop the price. I bet a $10 drop in price would knock AOL out of the box or at the vey least make cable internet THE way to go. The only reason I didnt switch (money issues) to DSL and satellite (I want discovery wings d@mmit!!!) was that DSL isnt available yet where I am. I know its slower than cable but.... I WANT DISCOVERY WINGS D@MMIT!!!!

Open hlpro.ini in your hyperlobby folder and set:

clientRate=8000

in the Forgotten Battles section. Leave it there unless your favourite host has intructions for a different speed in his/her briefings or server messages.

I disagree Tully; just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should.

I'd leave the client rate alone:

clientRate=2000

High client rates place more demand on the server, reducing the service offered to other clients.
Where the host is weak, the clients recieving a lower service will appear to lag.

Your high client rate, coupled with a weak server will be the cause of lag.

IIRC 8000 is equivalent to 56kb/s, I'm on a cable capable of about 8Mb/s. 8000 is hardly high and is what most of the big ded servers are currently recommending after lots of experimentation to work out best settings.

Im so jealous . I ask around here and they just laugh at me. ISP: "Broadband ?????? yeah we have it , what do you think we push your 56k connection through.Me :So when do you think I can get isdn ,dsl or any type of broadband.ISP service guys look at each other for a few seconds completly quiet then look at me: LAughing and pointing what in the hell makes you think you deserve broad band, hell thats why we made sure you had ****ty phone lines before you signed on with us we cant have YOU hoging up OUR bandwith. so get out of our face and learn to love your 56k/26.4k accuall connect before we get mad and disconnect you ever hour instead of every 3 " I envy yall with broadband I spend alot of time looking for a full real serv with only a few players in it only to join and play a few minutes and then have a bunch of ppl join ,then the server boots me . Enjoy you connect man my day is coming though lol

Bearcat, I think one thing that keeps people from getting cable hence, knocking online services like AOL out is the fact that cable is not available in most of the U.S. yet. Most metro areas, yes. Most towns, probably. Backwater towns and rural areas, hardly. My poor friend has satellite and the two-second delay keeps him from playing games online... And all because he lives out in the boonies!

I would like to thank you all for responding. I was feeling like a red-headed step-child there for a bit. Yeah, the only reason I can get Cable now is there is a local company that is giving me 26.99 untill Dec, then it goes up to 36.99. Not too bad, considering SBC is offering the same service for 62.99 a month.

I would get my behind handed to me on Greatergreen, as I am an externals junkie for the most part. DFing whilst stuck in the cockpit is not a strength of mine.

I can do ground pounding w/o externals though if I have to, does GG ever run any ground attack scenarios?

I will be in HL tomorrow night. Look for CWoS_Klaws. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

greatergreen runs all types of scenarios. In fact, most of our maps have specific objectives for aerial victory AND ground pounding.

The skill level can be quite high at times, but don't let that prevent you from stopping in when you get the opportunity. All are welcome.

i've got bellsouth dsl. yippie for me.

recently, i opted for their upgrade to up to 3mg down, 350kb up for an additional 5 buckeroonies per month. don't think i'm migrating anywhere...

so what's my point? yous with dsl, see if you can upgrade with your existing service to a more powereful connection for mere pennies per day...

and AT LEAST all yous bellsouth dsl folks should look into this!

made me happy...and that's what it's all about.

Don't let that prevent you from joining in (comms do help in a DF situation....there's a comm server as well).

Quite a few of us concentrate on ground pounding as we like to flip those maps on ground wins and watch all the furballs as we go on to our targets.

BTW, I've been checking the stats page and haven't been able to connect today. Quite possibly the server is down and being maintained, but keep checking.

I read something awhile back about a service they are developing to use our powerlines. If it ends up being developed all with electricity will have access, to broadband.
