chris60119

alstonia comes up all over Australia on google maps. The best band to come out of Australia in my opinion is John Butler Trio who is also one of the best guitarist in the world. Now to prove this..

I'm finding that it's a type of tree that grows in India..

JasonKies

Alstonia is a widespread genus of evergreen trees and shrubs, of the dogbane plant family Apocynaceae. It was named by Robert Brown in 1811, after Charles Alston, Professor of botany at Edinburgh from 1716-1760.

Guessing that's not the Alstonia he's referring to >_>. I also found a Comfort Inn Alstonia in India but that doesn't seem helpful either

It's the source of Cinchona bark (called fever bark), which is what contains the quinine that's extracted in the production of Tonic water. So one could guess Tonic, but I don't know the weather connection.

1. They're from Australia is not a good enough reasoning. It's all about the tree in the picture.

2. AC/DC is never going to be DLC.

Why? They're from Australia. That satisfies all the conditions of what I said.

In that case, since it's a picture of a tree then we're obviously getting Porcupine Tree DLC. Or perhaps Rush DLC including the song The Trees. Like come on if it was AC/DC there would be something clearly indicating it was them. Not saying there isn't but we certainly haven't found any reason to believe it's AC/DC at this point.

I just found it - https://www.anbg.gov.au/images/photo_cd/703931323804/081_2.jpg (dan flipped it horizontally)

It's from this page https://www.anbg.gov.au/photo/apii/id/a/10484 , indicating it is an alstonia tree. The photo was taken in Kakadu National Park NT but that's probably reaching for straws.

Additionally, there's an alstonia street in Nightcliffe (also in NT) where it's forecasted to rain all week, might have something to do with it.

If WHERE the tree in the photo from is actually the clue, it comes from Kakadu National Park as discovered ElatedOwl. It is located in the Northern Territory of Australia, whose only connection to music I can think of is the link to the band Midnight Oil who want the land returned to the aboriginal people. What does that all mean? Probably nothing because I cannot fathom in a million years Midnight Oil would be DLC. Is there any other connection to this part of Australia?

Figured the terrible pun was worth it. :P

Plus it's way too early for November Rain.

The Cars would be dope, but we are talking about the same band. Milkwood (according to wikipedia) is an anglo-Canadian band, they had one album called How's the Weather (http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/milkwood) and had Ric Otcasek [Ric Ocasek], Ben Orzechowski [Benjamin Orr] who later were in The Cars.

Yes I did. I wonder how long the exclusivity deal would be. It has been quite a few years. Is that why it says The Beatles will not be in RS also? Because I don't believe it gave a reason for that. And, by virtue of having their own game already, have already shown a willingness to be in music games.

Honestly, the biggest obstacle when it comes to AC/DC is that, last I've heard, the band is really opposed to selling downloadable singles bc they think they get higher profits if they only sell full albums instead of just letting fans pick the songs they like. Rock Band only got AC/DC songs because it was only made available as a disc you could buy at Walmart.

Unfortunately this isn't a voting situation and we do not get to choose what is coming Tuesday. The DLC that is coming Tuesday has already been decided and there is nothing we can do to change that. We are simply trying to predict what is coming. "Picking" a band/song you like in no way helps you to get that band/song.

It must be The Cars. The tree in the photo is specifically "Alstonia actinophylla" which is Milkwood. Milkwood releases an album called "How's the Weather" and then go on to form The Cars? How can it not be? Unless it's AC/DC that is. :p

It is The Cars. Five of them in the garage next week, in fact.

Richard Otcasek and Benjamin Orzechowski were in several bands together before The Cars, including Richard and the Rabbits, Cap'n Swing, and Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture (yes, Colonel Mustard from Clue -- he had a few albums, at least one of which is on Spotify). But Milkwood was their first band together, and they got as far as putting out an album of folk rock.

When I was planning my Papa Roach social media posts, I was listening to the Cars and my signals got crossed. Not sure if you've ever been having a conversation with someone and suddenly you find yourself saying a word from a song or TV show that is playing in the background, but it was kind of like that. :)

BTW, I had meetings and a late lunch. Sorry not sorry for the extended speculation.

Yea, this DLC is further extending the row of DLCs full of bands I've never heard of :) (I knew some songs in fact, but not the bands.)
Not complaining, btw. Not buying the songs either.. :D I'm just hoping to get some of my favorite bands in the future.
There are so many in the Rocksmith 1 DLCs, I really wish I could buy them on Steam when I have only RS2014.

I must learn more about The Cars though, it's interesting for me because Ocasek is a Czech word meaning "Little tail" in Czech. And he's married to a Czech model :) And I'm Czech, too....

This is great news! I have been waiting on this one. This has potential to be a great 5 pack.Nice chunky rythym playing along with some real tasty solos. The Cars were kind of thought as New Wave with heavy synthesizer, but Elliot Easton was a fantastic guitar player. So many gems on the first album alone, but I would pick up any of the likely picks from the first four albums.

Indeed.
Mull is actually a decent guitarist, it was a major part of his standup act for a long while. He did have at least one album that I liked, that a friend of mine had, with songs like "The Only Thing I Got that's Black is the Blues.", "Licks off of Records" (where he explains how he learned guitar) and "Baby Bottle Blues", where he played a Delta Blues slide tune by using a baby bottle on a ukulele.

In 2006, original Cars members Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes, along with vocalist Todd Rundgren got together and created The New Cars.

They released a live album (CD) called It's Alive, with 12 Car's tracks.

Great great stuff . . . I highly recommend it. Their rendition of Candy-O and Dangerous Type and phenomenal.

I always think it's weird that people get all butthurt over someone never having heard a group. Just like TomKQT said, all of us heard every group that we've ever heard a "first" time. Not to mention that I don't think of The Cars as so ubiquitous that EVERYONE knows who they are. I'd figure someone was trolling if they said they had never heard of the Beatles or Hendrix (maybe even someone like Metallica), but The Cars??? No.

I listened to a lot of country and 80's rock and hair bands through most of the 00's. When I started listening to Octane, I found a lot of groups that I had never heard that I liked - Shinedown, Seether, TDG, A7X, FFDP... It just took exposing myself to a different genre of radio. Otherwise, I would have never heard them playing on my local country station, obviously...

I am really looking forward to the Cars DLC. Elliot Easton is a very underrated guitarist and has some nice chops. Definitely one of those guys like Rick Nielsen or Buck Dharma who don't always get the respect they deserve. A fun fact is that Elliot used to play a Dean ML before someone else became famous for playing this particular guitar. Anyways, if you chose Heartbeat City as a basis for this week's DLC, I would suggest listening to The Cars or Candy O.

This is exactly right. Some bands never catch on in some areas but are widely popular in others. Rocksmith has provided many chances to listen to bands I would not normally listen to and have never heard of.

Not sure why so many seem to have have it in their heads that if they have never heard of a band or do not like the band they must suck and cry against it's inclusion.

If you really want to be the best musician possible I think it is important to study as many styles and genres as possible. Never know what you might learn checking out something off your beaten path.

Yeah, I see we are still talking about this even after I apologised. I forgot that not everyone has heard the music I have heard of so being self-entitled and whatnot, I went on the attack. Please forgive me internet.

Also, I don't want nor do I care to be 'the best musician possible'. I just want to learn songs by artists that I like.

And I still have my arms open for that hug of forgiveness... :P

But I have discovered many new artists/bands thanks to Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Rocksmith so there's that.

That was like some kind of a premonition (3 weeks before) . I'm on 1 premonition a year streak of 2 years now......altought i saw the Bachsmith coming like 4 months before it was release when most people were saying i was dreaming.

The Cars's first release(eponymous) is a must in the rock genre and a sure buy for me.

Scott Stapp is homeless, on meth, and thinks his wife and kid are members of ISIS.

Definitely denying that hug for safety reasons lol.

Wow, really? Usually for rockstars, its sex and drugs. Not psychosis... :/

So yeah, no hug for him.

Man, it's so weird seeing people in this thread and on the Riff Repeater comments section saying that "Drive" is The Cars's biggest hit and will probably be in the pack because I just listened to it and I don't think I've ever heard it before, whereas I can barely go a week without hearing "Just What I Needed" on classic rock radio. Apparently Drive was their highest-charting hit back in the day, so maybe this is an age gap thing, where Drive was everywhere back when it came out (before I was born) but songs like Just What I Needed get more radio play 30 years later? Or hell, maybe I've just missed hearing what is apparently a very popular song? Or maybe I have heard it before but forgot about it because I thought it was boring?

Either way, I doubt that Drive will be in The Cars pack. Yeah, "Jane Says" was in the Jane's Addiction pack, but let's be real, as good as JA is, they don't have many radio hits to choose from, whereas The Cars have enough guitar-driven radio hits to fill at least two 5-packs.

Completely agree. The Cars could fill two-5-packs with the first three albums . . .

The Cars (1978)
Candy-O (1979)
Panorama (1980)

Cant wait till tomorrow!

Really hope "Touch and Go" is one of them. The tone and phrasing in the solo are just sooo tasty.

Go have a listen if it's been a while, it's great!

+1 for the Cars, one of my favorite pop 80s bands, hope to see plenty of tracks in Standard E; should be fun :)

Just What I Needed and My Best Friend's Girl seem like obvious choices, and the only ones I'd say are all but guaranteed to appear in a The Cars pack, but if I had to choose three other songs to round out the pack, I'd go with You're All I've Got Tonight, Let's Go and Good Times Roll.

The Cars “Just What I Needed”
The Cars “Good Times Roll”
The Cars “Bye Bye Love”
The Cars “Let’s Go”
The Cars “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”

4 out of 5 ain't bad. "Bye Bye Love" is a great song, and the lack of "My Best Friend's Girl" makes me hopeful that it's being held back for a 2nd The Cars pack.

And good news for oldgeezer99, they're all in E-Standard tuning.

Nice illustration of how a band's popularity can vary by region (and by extension that it's perfectly possible for people to not have heard of a band that is a house-hold name for others).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cars_discography#Singles

I only know the Cars for 'Drive'. As it turns out, 'Drive' is the only cars song that came near the top 10 in the Netherlands, where I grew up. The other 3 singles they had in the charts 'peaked' at #40, #48 and #49. It doesn't surprise me I didn't recognise any of the songs I looked up.

Similarly, I only know Drive, and You Might Think; all this despite being an 80s kid and quite familiar with most 80s music. I guess the songs in this pack pre-dated that and out here in Singapore didn't get played any more by the 80s. Having said that, the preview/ad sounds interesting enough.
