Any attempt to copy/paste from an application that uses non-printable formatting characters will cause that message. If you're typing long replies the reply box sometimes times out, also resulting in that message.

A couple of things that can get around it are:

Saving your post as text only in notepad, then copy past from there; OR

Using the "Quick Reply" button (yellow folder icon next to the "Reply" button) instead of the full featured "Reply" option.

The same! What was your call sign in Warbirds? I understand there are a few players over here.

I just purchased AEP gold pack. Actually, finished a computer upgrade that finally got me over here. THe original IL-2 used to stutter too much for me to get in the grove. Now I have to climb the learning curve. I find the manual sparse!

Any good web sites for the basics on the airplanes? Like which ones have auto rich, and which one's do not? Not sure I can always trust the messages about the radiator and cowl flaps, etc. I searched the "recommended" sites and didn't find anything like that.

Worr,

My handle in Warbirds was Josf-JG14 or some combination of Josf and JG14.

Did you follow the P-38 to this place?

There is no need to wonder if you are forgetting anyone special. I simply remember your lectures on tactics. Thanks for those and I hope you share your views on this new sim with us here on this board.

The game offers a track recording feature that is really good for illustrating tactical manuevering. If you care to check out some examples then look here:

Track files (http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/il2guide/tracks.htm)

P.S. You may remember some of the other Warbirds JG14 members like Jagr, Saci, Roan, Ckmt, Drex, Dcdoom, MZ, Smil, Scot, MO...

I remember one particular member of the Flying Pigs who had a handle OKL, OKLE, or OKAL. Worr and OKL are all of your squad that my memory recalls at the moment.

One other member of your squad made that excellent score page, I can't remember his handle either.

Please excuse the babble, I must be getting senile.

These seem to be the offending characters when you copy and paste; ", +,-, '. (quotations, plus/minus sign and apostrophes. I get the same message when I try to edit my posts but if I retype the characters I have listed above then it works fine.

Ah, I remember you well! I remember bouncing you and your FW190 wing man one time out over water at high alt....was one long fight!

Did you follow the P-38 to this place?

Not exactly, though I jumped into a FTD thread in the ready room. Some things never change! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I wanted to come here sooner, but only recently upgraded the computer with some muscle to play the game. I'm still off line however getting on top of the learning curve.

Like I said, you have to dig for your own data it seems. Having the hardest time on engine heat...as I can't even read the guages in my resolution. So it sneaks up on me.

You are very kind, josf. But there are lots of "special" people here nonetheless, I'm sure!

Since this is the General Discussion forum it doesn't seem too far out to continue the trip down memory lane as long as I can add a few up to date references.

Some data has already been dug up.

I look at my instruments with narrow angles of view. Snap views are out too. Mouse view or Track IR is in. After clawing the way up the learning curve it is possible for me to think 'what is my velocity' and I look from my target at 7 oclock low to my Air speed indicator up close and personal, then back to my target with wide peripheral vision all in fluid, realistic, realtively smooth transition. I can no longer tolerate snap views.

Many of the JG14 alumni are not likely to be found playing IL2 but if you do find Hertt and Josf on-line in some form of IL2 then be ready for another good fight!

This is a very good starting point when you do take the on-line plunge:
Hyperlobby (http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/)

Here is an excellent server currently running the pre-AEP version of the game:

Greatergreen (http://greatergreen.com/il2/) has 'multiple T3's.', and is a very good setup. Unfortunatley that server requires the dedicated capacity not yet available with AEP so they will not be offering the P-38 until the release of a patch allowing that feature.

When your name appeared in the kill buffer I often made it a point to hunt you down. Once I found you south east of F12 (I think, upper north west island) Just before you landed I mannage to get some hits. I had to take what I could get, which wasn't much.

I couldn't find OKAL on the Flying Pigs page, perhaps my memory fails and he was part of a different squad. He was another pilot that I tried to find whenever possible. Just hovering around watching the kill buffer list the victims and following the trail was an education in itself. I learned a lot about the behavior of players doing these hunting expeditions. If nothing else I learned that there will always be someone better and often someone a whole lot better no matter how good I think I am. I learned to fly defensively knowing guys like Worr were up.

How do you do "narrow" agles of view?

I'm in 32 bit color, but the second to lowest resolution. I just cannot read the guages at a glance or even a stare. I rely on the engine noise quite a bit...though when you hit auto the noise goes wrong for a while. I also use the speed, hdg, alt que in the lower left corner. You don't allow that online???

OKAL was on the flyingpigs...but joined late. He flew the FW190 almost entirely, if I remember. That web site is old...so it may not have been current after the web master left the game.

Ah, yes, the hunt. I flew the FLYME plane in warbirds and would love the ability to read all the radio channels at once to see who was hunting me. What a gas! But sometimes being the hunted got old...a tag team of 190s were often tireless. And my lone wolf habits often found me too far from home, and with a hot engine..

I love how you can just boot up and find a fight right away in warbirds still. Haven't tried hyperlobby, and a AEP server will be key for me. But first I'll exhaust the off line missions.

I was already at the web site you mentioned above...and I WILL look at the tracks. Man, I wish we had those for lectures back in the days. I believe zeno still has a warbird lecture still up on his website from one of the cons.

I'd still like to know more about temperatures and optimum MP settings and the like. I haven't seen anything yet. Usually, I just pull down my sun visor in my piper comanche it has all that right there!

Any other Warbird players out there?

Some servers do..especially ones with Russian planeesets because the gauges are hidden on those planes. You might want to turn on your cockpit lights to see your gauges better. It wont take too much in the way of frames if any..... and it will make it easier to see the dials.

woa! I tried that link and logged in with ubi...but then these BBS boards wouldn't show up. So had to log off there; and log here to get back in. Nasty security!

Heya Revvin! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, already turned on the lights. Still can't do the airspeed like I should be able to. I do airspeed at a glance on an approach...eyes always moving off the guage as soon as they are on it. IL-2 just doesn't give me that ability even with the lights on. And some AC have the guage burried. So I guess I couldn't fly on line with out the speed bar.

What's up with the sound bug? It was there when I flew IL-2 the first time some years ago. They never fixed that? Engine sound varries if you use auto pilot on and off even for just a second.

Worr,

Since I use my Thrustmaster Cougar left thumb microstick as a mouse to direct my views as if it were a mouse I have Hat Switches available that are mapped to change viewing angle.

From the main menu in IL2 go to:
Controls
Then scroll down until finding:

Wide View
Normal View
Gunsight View
FOV 50 (or FOV xx)

My hat switch is set up to do the following:

Hat1 up: Page Down - Wide View
Hat1 right: Normal View - Delete
Hat1 down: FOV 50 - Page up
Gunsight View: - Home

Check this out:

http://mysite.verizon.net/res0l0yx/Dark%20background.jpg

I think view angle can even be mapped to an analog axis and could be worked to simulate focusing for depth perception. I've been thinking about using the axis feature but so far the 4 levels of view angle work for me to help see detail or peripheral when needed.

You may find what you need on that comprehensive web site linked earlier it is mananged by Michampa.

I'm off now to look for others in JG14.

We have been running an on-line coop.

Do check out the track files and if you take the time to read the instructions on the web page those track files can be filed and edited to work as training files. I've written text into my training file examples on that page.
The one titled Teamwork may look familiar to you.

worr
04-15-2004, 09:42 PM
Thanks, josf.

Yes, I have the views mapped...but what I was asking for was a way to avoid using the mouse in flight to focus in on guages in order to read them. Sheesh, I don't lean forward to look at guages while in real flight! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But since there is an auto focus to the gun sight, you'd think something could be created to look at the airspeed as well as maybe the altitude, and then also the temp gauge on the other side with just a hat switch. I can actually see the AH with a glance.

Does that sound reasonable?

OK, off to view those tracks!

Worr,

Reasoable is one thing...

OK, I've got it.

This next bit comes from a guy who is dead now but it was my great fortune to know him.

He was one of the few that made it throught the Battan Death March.

He said:

If you ****(poopie) in one hand

And you wish in the other hand

Which one fills up first?

It is getting late and my mind is wandering some. I ran a few missions on-line from hyperlobby on a WarClouds server and simply had my *** handed to me.

Track IR or any devise that can utilize the mouse view feature is the future.
Get on the bus or get left behind.

Worr, NewView might solve your problem.
This utility allows to quickly check gauges with mapped key (I think lshift by default) and additionaly has many other usefull functions.

Check this:

pags! A familier name and fellow buffateer.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif There are actually quite a few current and former WB'rs in IL-2 now.

We normally fly FB on Thursdays and the WB S3 on Sundays. Right now we're still flying FB 1.22 version, Stump refuses to go AEP until we see a flyable B-25. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Anyhow, let us know if you want to join in with us some Thursday. We try and keep things pretty simple.

Heya, pags! Good to see you. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have a saitek X36F and 35T set up. The throttle has a mouse button that I have set to trim right now, as I haven't bottered with the Saitek software and just imputed commands from the IL-2 front end to the stick. But I could configure the mini stick on the throttle to do this. Thanks for the link! Already got it downloaded.

It will be a while before I get online. But maybe this summer. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I miss the sheep they were soooo soft and cuddly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif.

Warbirds 2 1/2 years, I was with Vadr and III/JG2.

Miss the BoB scenarios, was a hoot.

Also as for watching gauges and changing views, I HIGHLY reccomend TrackIR2 head tracking software/hardware. I got it late last year and works like a charm! I can't play sims without it.

I use the Antenna Axis Rotary on my Cougar throttle to zoom in/out.

I resemble that remark! Used to fly Purp alot in WB 2. I was +stel+ over there. Jeez, I recognise a few of the old WB'er handles in here! Great thread.

Flying Pigs in P-38Ls!!!!!!!!!! I just got over the nightmares, and now they are all flooding back.

I used to be a CM in WB 2.7, but got busy going overseas for a few years after 9/11 so I kind of dropped out of WBs. Found my way over here when I bought a Dell XPS (used a MAC in WBs). Now that I'm retired I am finding some stick time and IL2 graphics are unbeatable.

Welcome aboard Worr! <S>! And howdy to all the other WB'ers above.

Another Warbirds player here
(I flew as Yorkie, but ended
up posting here under my
Aces High handle). In our
Il2 squad there is one other
ex Warbirds player at least.
I keep hoping others might
make the transition now
there are more RAF planes.

In Warbirds we mostly flew
bombers, so the lack of
flyable Allied bombers is a
pain and forces me into
fighter planes. One day the
B25 or Pe2, perhaps (or
the Mosquito or A20) on
tree top level dawn raids...

worr,

By default the rear view
on the hat is mapped to an
instrument view, but just at
the same zoom you are using
for other views. It might be
possible to program with
Saitek a 'instrument with
zoom view' but I don't know
how you'd return to the zoom
you had before. Perhaps we
can ask for a specific
instrument view for a future
patch?

-TART-,

The last time I saw Drex he was landing a 109 as I took off in a 110. This was sometime last year in the game WWII-online. Drex is no longer active in our squad. He may still be in touch with -Jagr- who is still a very active original member.

I joined the squad sometime after -Drex- went on the inactive list.

Perhaps Drex is going for the massive multiplayer capabilities in WWII-online.

We all have our preferences. Personally the best WWII combat flight simulation experience I've seen is the Warbirds S3 events before they switched to Warbirds III.

I think it will be really difficult to get to that level again.

During the S3 'March Madness' event I played as a fighter pilot, wingman, 2nd Schwarm, JagdStaffel, Squad member, and Luftwaffe CO.
It was the right time and the right place for me, and not likely to be realized again. But then again I am just as happy flying a simple wing pair, or even hunting alone. Sometimes, on very rare occasions, we even manage an effective Schwarm in IL2. Who could want for anything more than that? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Woa! Some old, old handles here. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Got the nview...will take some time before I get it up. Hope it works. But you'd think they could do that with the sim as is. The gun sight view zoomed in seems simple enough.

Worr, out

Hi Guys,
We never flew in War Birds, we originate from European Air War.
Of Course we jumped straight into IL-2 when it was first released a couple of years ago, and well we are still here, venturing into Pacific Fighters next as you know.

Oleg has pretty well cleaned up eh! I think just about everybody from all the WW II Combat flight Sims is flying FB these days.

S!

Greetings =worr=,

I think I did some training with you many moon's ago as 416 RCAF The Lynx "Buzzbe". Presently flying Luftwobble for 5./JG52 and our sister squad 9./JG54

Hening and I jumped to AH and the 416 crew stayed at Warbirds, by the time they jumped to AH I was already heavily engaged with il-2 and have not looked back.
