What maps are they talking about when one sees something like "5 new maps"? Are they talking about the maps when you press "M" or something else? I need to spend about a week with someone who really knows IL2FB! Thanks for the help.

They're probably referring to the levels on which you are flying your missions. Some patches and the Ace Expansion Pack include new levels, aka 'maps', which weren't available beforehand.

An example would be the OnlineMT map, which is the desert-based level, that was included in the v2.04 patch for FB/AEP.

any one mission in FB, whether its a dog-fight, co-op or offline campaign takes place on a single "map" which is as you guessed the map that appears when you hit "M".

In FB if you fly "off the map" the world just ends (the terrain just turns flat) you are limited to the map that loads at the start of the mission in terms of useful terrain.

There are several types of maps. The most common ones are historical based on real world areas like "kuban" or "Finland" or "Crimea". Other are purely for online play and are imaginary .. such as the OnlineMT mentioned by WTE_Dukayn.

New maps will mean more choices online and if they are historical the possibility of new different offline campaigns.

in the original IL2 it was possible to actually fly "under" the terrain .. not sure if that bug exists in FB
