Thread: RWR / TEWS Launch Indications | Forums

We all know that the radar warning recievers will issue a launch warning for radar-guided missiles fired while the target is radar-locked. But what about the following situations:

    Thermal Guidance (R-27T/ET, R-73) from a Radar-Lock.
Thermal Guidance from an EOS/IRST lock.
Semi-Active Radar Guidance from an EOS/IRST lock.
Active-Radar Guidance from an EOS/IRST lock.

Sorta sidenote, I've read several places that most modern jets have IR-warning systems but they are obviously classified. Also read a story about a KFOR soldier pointing a laser range finder at an F/A-18, which in turn pumped flares and three A-10s appeared low 10 mins later.

As long as you have to tell the missile where to go, your plane will emit guidance commands, radio signals which can be picked up and identified by the RWR as "bad news".

IR-guided from EOS should not be detected unless the target can detect the rocket motor. Having a radar-lock and being able to slave the IR seeker head to it will obviously generate a lock warning, but not launch warning, unless what I wrote above.

Radar-guided, active or not, will need some sort of steering command. Perhaps there is some hot stuff with initial INS navigation or something, but it'll at least let you know when it's half way.

(No, I'm not really talking specifically about Lock On, oops)

As far as LO is concerned:

    - thermal guidance: no warning at launch at all
    - Semi active guidance: only one warning.
    - Active guidance: two warnings, may be more(Did the programmers think about active missiles reacquiring their targets? i believe so! )

    In the F-15:

Thermal: One bloop. CHOP THROTTLE, FLARE AND RUN!
SARH: Bleeping plus lock on tone. Lose the lock, lose the stick.

ARH: Bleeping, lock tone, and if you lose the lock tone occasional bleeping as the AR pings you.
