Thread: Slow To React | Forums

Ok, so I start the first level (underground), I get to the first cutscene (where the two soldiers are talkin), the game is running perfect and smooth. I sneek past the guard, get to a door, open the door and theres a little computer device with a face on it on a crate and it starts talkin to you. Now, the scene freezes, but you can still hear the characters talkin, then when the talkin has finished, the cutscene carries on. when the scene is finished and your back to playing, the game has slowed right down, and reacts REAL slow. If you want to walk foreward you have to hold the arrow key down and it'll respond after like 3 minutes, and when the character does walk foreward he doesn't flow, he shunts. My computer more than meets whats neede to play the game.

What exactly do you have in terms of specs.

"Meets requirements" is not good enough to have smooth gameplay. Folks have had poor performance with 1 gig RAM, Radeon 9800 pro and P4 3.2 CPU. You need to have updated harware drivers. That includes mobo chipset, vid card, sound card. No extraneous USB devices, no adware, spyware, viruses. no background programs running etc. If you have 256 MB, P4 1.2 GHz, 5200FX you will not get good framerates if you can play at all.

That 9200 is your bottleneck. Also, how much ram do you have. 512 will get you through, but 768+ is the way to go for this game.

Ideally for smooth gameplay on medium settings, you'll want a 9600 or 5700 Ultra and at least 768 MB of ram.

For the best experience without breaking the bank, you want a 9800 Pro or 5950 Ultra and 1 GB of ram.

    or...

you can go into the far cry config, into advanced, and turn ALL AF and AA down to 0

if you wish to play far cry in all beauty, then i also suggest you get a new gfx card, but if you dont really want to, then just try this and you should be able to play.

If what i said doesnt work, then look around this forums - at the stickies i think - as lots of 9200 owners have this problem

I'd ALSO recommend you upgrade to a better video card because your Radeon 9200 doesn't have full hardware support for DirectX 9 or Shader Model 2.0 (SM2.0)! It's a DirectX 8.1 card which only supports up to SM1.4! You're missing out on a LOT of the SM2.0 eye candy in Far Cry and you'll be getting REALLY slow framerates with Shadows enabled because Far Cry is having to use software paths to render them!

Far Cry's cutscenes are in Bink video format (.BIK file extension). If your system's current Bink video codec (compressor/decompressor) is outdated, it can cause all sorts of strange effects!

To get the LATEST Bink video codec, download and install the RAD Video Tools. These come with a Bink Video Player, so you can test the playback of Far Cry's cutscenes OUTSIDE of Far Cry!

If the cutscenes play OK in the Bink Video Player, try running Far Cry and see if they still play OK in-game.

If you STILL have the same problem, I can only recommend a better video card and/or more RAM, ideally 1Gb or more, but at least 768Mb (512+256) for smooth gameplay.

My system is an Athlon XP 3200+ (Barton), ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard, with 768Mb RAM and a GeForce FX 5900XT video card. Far Cry plays nice and smooth on this rig, averaging 40-50fps!

With a decent video card, YOUR system should get similar (or better) performance than mine!

    Hope this helps.

    D'OH!

The cutscene you're talking about is NOT a Bink video! It uses Far Cry's 3D engine! Sorry...

It's a shame the forum DOESN'T allow posts to be deleted! What a waste of space I am! LOL!

Oh well, my advice on video card and RAM is still valid, though... Although I should have read Mad_Murdock's post first!

    D'OH! D'OH!
