Make sure your XP firewall is off. Check your other firewall to make sure both HypberLobby and IL-2 are not blocked. Under IL-2 setup, make sure port 21000 is enabled and also make sure port 21000 is enabled in your hardware firewall.

Make sure you change your online name to something other than the default name given (i.e. John "Mad" Doe) If it's a scripted server then all default names will be auto-kicked. Go to your pilot page and change it there. Then try to join again.

One tip with firewalls - run FB in a window to start, you cna then see and respond to your firewall alert and configure it.
    Then change mode to fullscreen.

You should only need to do this once

    Hi guys,
I have exactly the same problem that ginog 12345 has. I get the same time out. One important question might be - is he on AOL, like I am, because AOL can be a ***** with blocking connections.
Anyway, I went and switched my firewall off as advised, but this did not cure the problem.
Coiuld Luckyboy advise on what the "other firewall" is and where to find it.
I couldn't find any mention of port 21000 under IL2 setup - can we have a clue as to where to find this?
I found the guide, but it's massive, and whilst it would be interesting to go through every detail, it would be neat to try and narrow things down to discovering why we can't get on multiplayer.
I've made sure, as advised by TgD Thunderbolt 56, that my online name is not John "Mad" Doe, so that can't be the problem.
Incidentally, I couldn't join anything that I was compatible with yesterday, but when I chose to host my own server, I actually turned up in the cockpit ready for action. But how do I know for sure that others can join?
More ideas please Gentlemen - I gave up trying to join IL-2 multiplay months ago and signed up with Fighter Ace instead, but now that ginog12345 has started this thread, it would be great if we could crack the problem, and I'd like to know if he is cured yet. Thanks.

To find out the status of Cousin Billy's forewall go to Start>Control Panel

and right click network connections and go to properties. Look on the advanced tab

the reason this happens on ubicom is because of a problem with it using default as the IP Please use my online guide then try again, it should sort it out for you names etc are not what is causing it..

Yes that was the easy part. I went to start/control panel, right clicked my network connections, went to properties, looked on the advanced tab, and saw a little X in the firewall. So I removed the X, which presumably closed the firewall. I still couldn't join multiplayer.
Now what is the "other firewall" you talk about where I can check that Hyperlobby and IL-2 are not blocked, and where can I find mention of port 21000 under IL-2 setup, because I can't see it.

This is the part of your message I couldn't follow up:
"Check your other firewall to make sure both HypberLobby and IL-2 are not blocked. Under IL-2 setup, make sure port 21000 is enabled and also make sure port 21000 is enabled in your hardware firewall."

    Thanks

Truth is the assumption is that no-one uses only XP's firewall (pre-sp2) as it's next to useless.

So unless you have installed a firewall you don't have another!

    Never connect without firewall!
