    vipe, good first effort.

some nice camera angles (i especially liked the 'satellite photos' at the beginning, nice touch) i also liked the cockpit view with the helmet sight. nice job

i wasnt too sure about the music, but thats my taste (even though i like metallica and millencolin, i also love 'film music')

also some of the film was a bit pondorous, by letting the audiences attention drift sometimes, i think turning and burning bit done this, it was a bit repetitive.

however apart from that it was extremely well done. it was pretty, so im presuming the avi recorder was used??

nice work, look forward to seeing what you come up with next

    Thanks Raven,

yeah was using the avi recorder for that extra quality

it seems that the music choice if 50/50, some people seem to really like it, for others it's a major letdown. Personally I digged the song too much to change it.

For the turning and burning, I tried to make it look like a real dogfight, proved to be a bit more difficult than I originally imagined, but turned out ok IMO.

    Thanks for your nice comments

    Hi Vipe,
I'm thinking about making a movie also. Would like to find out what you did to make yours and any pointers you may have. Thanks.

well I think there's much more talented / more knowing, people out there than me, but here's how I did my movie.

You want to do minimissions first. Like when I take off from the airfield it's just that, there's no waypoints or enemies anywhere. Then there's another mission with 2 F18s and me in the point where I end the approach. Then another with only 1 F18, positioned about the same place where I down the first F18. This is because then you can record small tracks which make easier edits and records and also you can fly the missions a few times for better action.

After you've made the missions (or maybe just make the first and see where you are after that so it's easy to create the second). Don't push the "fly" button but select "record track" from the menu. Fly the mission as you would.

After you end the mission you'll get a screen where you can save the track. Enter a good name, so after you'll end up with many tracks you know which one is which.

Then select mission editor / open track / map / "edit video" this will let you set up some nice views, it plays the track you recorded earlier but now you can set up those exterior views etc. so you don't need to do that while you actually fly

after you've done this select "record avi". I record in raw format with 40 quality and 25 frames per second, have no idea if those values are good or not but that's what I used. The files you make will be really big and if they are larger than 2 gigs, they are too large and cannot be opened. Luckily you can select what's the timeframe you want to record (no need to record one big track in single go). Also this is the time you want to put all your graphics settings to max. Also I edit the graphics.cfg file to put the game resolution to 640x480. No point in recording higher res movies than that IMO.

It seems that most people use FRAPS, and film the movies at â½ speed and speed them up later. With the ingame avi recording you can have 1600x1200 resolutions with 6xAA and 16xAF with max detail and still get 25fps. I think that's pretty nice.

After that I used windows movie maker 2 to edit the video, if you have windows xp you might have this already. If not you can download it from microsoft. Don't have the URL now but google will help. I have never used any movie editor before in my life, but this was really easy to get into. Definitely not the most powerfull editor there is but good for amateurs. Also one thing why it's good idea to record in raw format is the fact that you don't want to compress the movies 2 times. So record avis in raw format and encode to wmv using movie maker (or encode to some other format using another editor). Anyways it's not a good idea to first encode to say xvid and then to divx.

    Hope this helps...

Nice work Vipe. I particularly like the start and use of cockpit zoom shots to break up the action.

I think air to air action is the most difficult subject to tackle. Plenty of attempts have been made but for me (and perhaps only for me) it seems very hard to make it engaging. Part of that is because visually there's less to occupy the eye.... just planes and sky most of the time, whereas with ground targets you can usually look for interesting angles and scenery to turn "just another clip" into something more interesting or unusual.

So, er... I think you did well given that limitation :-)
