Thread: Track IR2.....Shall I return it? | Forums

  1. #1
I have had TrackIR2 for 2 weeks now. I have tried various profiles/using caps/and making booms with balls attached and I just cant seem to get an enjoyable experience from this product. I have tried various smoothing settings and always I get eratic movements. I want to experience smooth and slow movement from left to right and up and down(similar to using the hat switch). I find it quite shaky and stuttery and sometimes it appears to miss frames.I also find the slightest head movement (ie:1cm) translates to a large movement on screen and therefor I find it hard to read anything in the cockpit.I'm sure if anyone can help me get the satisfaction I'm looking for it will come from someone on these forums. I really want this product to work.
    Many Thanks Guys

Setting one or two points to either side of neutral to Zero may help you. Try to make the profile very non-linear, i.e. very little movement around center, and then a big jump at the final 2 points on either side.

Regarding the frame-skips, I don't have that. I am very happy with the TrackIR in both Lomac and IL2.

    Don't send it back!!

There's a couple of threads you might want to search for that discuss Track IR settings in detail. Try this for starters:

Make sure you're using 'enhanced mode', where the TrackIR is lit up blue. This also requires 'cockpit mouse' to be turned OFF in Lock On's options settings.

Lock On's implimentaion of Track IR is particularly sensitive for some reason, although I think this is due to be fixed in 1.02. In the meantime, reduce the sensitivity using the axis profiles in the Naturalpoint software. Setting each point to something like '5' should make things a lot easier. If you like a deadzone (I personally don't) set the centre to '0', and the adjacent values to '2'.

Hope this is of some use but like I said, do a search and you'll find a whole lot more info on the subject.

    Dont send it back!

I also had the same problems as you stated , but then i tryed out different profiles , and im very happy with it now.

Turns out that you need to create a deadsone in the middle. That worked great for me.
I wont fly without it , wont be the same

I started out with the dot on the tip of the bill of a baseball cap, but that was not very good. When I turned the cap around and put the dot on the back it was much better. It seemed that it was better, the closer to my head. I think the baseball cap bill just exagerated the movement too much.

Your Boom with a ball on the end sounds crazy. That would really exagerate the movement.

Don't send it back yet. It sounds like your just not using it correctly. It took me about 2-3 weeks of trying different things, but now I won't fly without it. It is awesome!

I have one square w/2 dots on each side of the face of my ballcap, not the bill. I had to adjust the settings quite a bit but now it runs as smooth as silk. Don't return it.

I'm a PC gamer. Any comments I make that don't specifically state a platform you can bet I'm referring to PC.

Thanks for the responses guys.I have read all of the related threads in this forum as well as IL-2 and some of the profiles I have used are as follows. The setting used where:
    0-0-0-0-3-5-7-9
    0-0-0-1-2-4-6-8
    0-0-0-1-3-5-7-9
    0-1-2-4-8-16-16-16
and also Mike Hancocks profile. I am not really clued up on setting dead zones and so if anyone could give specific instructions I would really appreciate it.
The following links give you some idea of the ball and boom I constructed. What do you guys think of these various ideas.

Don't cast my precious back into the flames!!

    Here's quick guide...

The motion interpreted by TrackIR is called "Speed"...basically
it means that input from your head goes through this curve and
determines how fast your view should move, depending on how far
    from center it is.
The speed is controlled by curve A.

In my custom settings here, you can see that it moves faster
(moves view faster with same head motion) in the edges,
and a big, smooth deadzone in the middle. The deadzone
is just the speed set to zero at a point.

To adjust your settings / create a custom curve, you need to set
the "Speed" (B) at each "Point" (C).

The little triangle above the "0" on the X-axis shows where
I'm currently editing, and you can see the speed is set to zero.
(Perhaps a different screenie would be better...)

Move the Edit Point (C) slider one notch, and you will see
two triangles indicating the two points you are editing.
(One for each side of center).

There are 8 "points" to edit along each axis, I prefer to edit X
separately from Y, but that's a matter of individual taste.

You said that you felt it moved very fast, so you might want
to try setting the speed to lowest setting (not zero) AT EACH POINT.

Set the speed at each point as you wish, you use Smoothing (D)
to control how smooth the curve will be between each point you set
the curve in. If smoothing is set to zero, the transition between
each point will be very abrupt and jagged.
I don't think smoothing does anything at all if you use a preset curve, although I'm sure there's lot's of people who thought it was much better.

    Hope that helps...

I seriously hope that guy closes the curtains before donning such apparatus. Reckon if I had to resort to anything even remotely like that I'd attach it to me desk with a particularly short piece of string, just to make sure I never answered the door whilst wearing it.
