    I'm looking at upgrades right now and I'm not sure if I need them or it is a matter of drivers/ram/whatever.

    P4 2.66,
    Intel 850EMVRL Mobo
    512MB RDRAM
    WIN XP
    ATI Radeon 8500 128Mb (Cat 3.4 Drivers)
    (will post dxdiag if asked)

    For the most part IL-2 FB runs pretty well on my computer on excellent except that it tends to get a bit choppy when shooting cannons and seeing the explosions, load times also tend to be a bit long (especially Leningrad), and come to think of it, flying in Leningrad is a bit choppy also.

    I *usually* play the game at 1152x864 (85hz) which is the same resolution as my computer desktop with basically the Radeon 8500 setting chosen in the setup file.


    My question is: Can I fix these problems by simply getting different drivers/changing resolution, or will I need to get more RAM/New Video Card (I hope at least my CPU and MoBo are sufficent )

    Any ideas guys?

    I think a good vid card will do wonders for you. Something like a 9800Pro.

    More RAM could help lessen the stutters over the cities, but I wouldn't put any money into more RDRAM. That's a dead horse. The vid card can make a difference with that as well.

    For now, I would definately update the ATI drivers and try dropping resolution to 1024x768. http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/w...x=9&submit.y=5

    I was actually looking into a 9600 (of some sort) because I'm not really up to the monetary expenses of a 9800. What video card would you guys reccomend (not just chipset, specific video card) that is affordable ($100-$125).

    I'll try dropping resolution and such.

    Just a question, Why is RDRAM a dead horse?

    Also, I heard 3.4 was the best for Excellent settings, is this true or should I switch to 3.5?

    Try and slerge for 9800Pro 128 not much more on sale.................1 G ram is best . My system uses average 700mb for FB .


    Steve V is driver expert but for excellent 4.5s are good on later card s......

    And if the 9800 Pro is a bit much on the wallet, the 9600XT is a super card. I just bought one and installed about three weeks ago. After some tweaking per PF_Coasties settings for IL2 and the ATI card, I never stutter in high action now and my frame rated are very respectable averaging in the 40's in the Host Choice Online Stalingrad missions always using Perfect Landscape. It's actually that way with about any mission except for the Pacific map and that deep blue water.

    The difference in frame rate performance between the 9600XT and the 9800 Pro is only slight. My squad mates' computer and my computer have the same specs with the exception that he is running twice the ram that I am, which I am running 512. He has recently installed a 9800 Pro and I'm running the 9600XT. At any given time in each mission we fly together, his frame rates are 3 to 5 fps more than me. With the exception of flying over allot of water. With his 8 pipelines, it doesn't hit his fr's hard at all. With my 4 pipelines, it hits my frame rates for about 10fps. But even losing that many fps, I am still running in the 30's. So for the money and the performance given by the card, I can whole heartedly stand behind the 9600XT that is built by ATI. But imho, the 9800 Pro is the best between the two. I hope you can find one on sale. If not, you won't be dissappointed with a 9600XT. Good luck! And sorry for being so long winded. loll S!

    I'm probably going to get a 9600 XT because since ATI is coming out with a new card (X800 I beleive?) it is my speculation that the price of the rest of the cards will drop significantly (Am I correct?).

    $42 bucks diff for 9800Pro128 at newegg , maybe cheaper elsewere......

    Yes pices will go down more . A 9800Pro128 was once 499

    Install Service Pack 1 for XP. Its a must have that includes your USB support.

    Lower sound hardware acceleration to Standard in dxdiag tool.

    Chipset drivers are current.

    I like and use the cat4.5 myself with the Excellent option. (They are buggered for Prefect.) Can't predict the ATI future prices, but do know you'll be very happy with either version of the 9800, pro or XT. Have fun coming to a decision.
