Eats up CPU and makes things harder to hear.

so my guess is your saying its ear candy only

maybe you could elaborate more on this:

    "makes things harder to hear"

It muffles lots of sounds and just the fact that it can use cpu to the point where your game will drop fps dramatically (depending on your particular system setup, especially if you have onboard sound) makes it an unappealing option.

I use my Onbrd sound and it doesnt affect my performance at all tho I DO rely on the Virtualization cuz i dont find it Muffled its worse if I turn it OFF
I can hear exactly where the enemy is(within reason of course) so its Ear Candy in the Best way IMO

Great question, I've always wondered the same thing myself. But from the answers, I can't tell one way or the other if it's it good or just a waste of cycles.

If it helps locate footsteps, it's a must. But if it's just ear candy, maybe lose it.

As a testing ground for frame rate hits, crank up the Port Town map from Community Map Pack 3 and start out moving left along the water. The water sound gets very loud and my frames take a serious dump. Chances are it's the EAX doing that though. I'll have to experiment more with this.

EAX will add effects or inhance the effects in a game. Audio virtualization brings to life what the mapmakers have added for ambient effects. I believe footsteps are seperate from all that anyway. Meaning, if you turn audio virtualization on, you get the echoes of a footstep. But if it's off you only here the footstep.
