I am one of those guys that reformat like every 3 weeks or so cause of stupid mistakes in the registry. (Don't drink and registerytweak lol). But im having fun, so what...
I have windows xp.. normaly i format fat32. Ravenshield runs good but gpf's now and then...
Now i accidently formatted ntfs and i dont have gpf's anymore for a whole week now, but i have way lower fps. Is there anybody that can explain this to me??
Is this common behaviour or is my hd worn out lol???

FAT32- From my experience runs games better and provides higher graphic card performance over NTFS. I run FAT32 and XP myself. When I was taking my MCSE classes I ask my teacher about this. We figured it must have something to do with NTFS having more overhead then FAT32. Mainly in regards to its enhanced security features.
FAT32 gives me roughly a 20% performance increase over NTFS in running games & applications. Downside, I get about a 20% decrease in network and internet performance using FAT32.

I don't know much about partitions but I do know that you don't need to reformat that much. If you mess up don't format try this. Insert XP and boot it up. When it asks if you want to boot from the CD click "any key". Now tell it you want to install. It will come back and say that there is already Windows are you sure. I think here you either click Yes or select Repair. It will reinstall Windows and usually fix everything. This is a lot better than losing everything that you had on the drive.

Win XP, 2000, 2k-03 Servers all run more stable as ntfs.
Th estructure of each format would just be too confusing to discuss, but think of it this way, Fat 16 straight format, fat32 compressed 16 (hence32) and ntfs is sorta an open striped style.
the gpf's are due to xp reading from this compressed format. ME is famouse for em. Now consider ths. NTSF uses page flipping and not virtual memory, same concept put works differently.
My system is win2k server, 1 40 gig ata 133 hd, asus a7n8x delux mobo, audigy sound, Nvidia 4200 8xagp. 1 gig 3200ddr 2 dual sideburst chips.
My HD is split in 6 partitions. C-3g D-10g E-10g F-10g G-3g H-2g (I know this doesnt add up to 40, but ntsf uses ~50Meg for identifiying itself)
C - drive is my Virtual Memory (Pageflipping) Drive
D - Win install
E - Programs
F - Games
G - Download Program installs, some tmp stuff
H - Windows Temp files, Temp Inet Files
I actually have 2.8 GIG of Virtual Memory and 1 gig of DDR. I very rarly go over 38% resources used with RvS and TS running, Cable connection.
Now, I have had some Gpf's but mostly on maps installed after. Hence user made ones. My FPS on Average runs about 75-85. And have seen a 160 during a map change.
I have tweaked the INI files to vsync off and forcing a 85 refresh. 1028 screen res. Netspeed is set at 5500. for best results, lower all the in game video to low or none, and turn on 1 at a time to med or high and see what is causing the dropouts.
I also doubled my video ram size and set the CacheSizeMegs to 256. I have all latest drivers for video and sound. The newest audigy drivers actually gave me a 10-15 boost in fps.
so moral of the ntfs issue, set a partition as c, make it a few gigs, not over 3-4 at most. once runnin, go into your properties and moe the page flipping to the c drive and make it about 95% of the drive. this will leave a bit of room for windows to write to its needed bootup files. Dont ever format the c drive in windows, or youl not be able to boot.
Reinstall dx9 from internet using the dx9websetup exe file. this also cured a 'glitch' i was seeing about every 5sec for about a 1/16 of a sec. like a mouse glitch.
Hope this helps you understand the 2 and get an insight to how ntfs uses vmem( most important)
Also create a 'Power User' account and use that for gameing, will use less 'Services' or just turn off the ones you don't need runnin. I wont go into this as turning off the wrong service, will cause unknown results.

I'd recommend running NTSF with Win XP. Personal choice.
Secondly set your page file to 2.5 times your ram for both the min and max. For example - I have a 1 Gig of RAM and set my page file to 2560MB. I don't suggest using partitions....again my opinion. As long as the page file is set with min and max the same, there will not be issues of it being fragmented.

Good name Krom! I was also a Krom - [IL]Krom in Alien vs Predator 2.
Personally, I get the most stability out of NTFS, and Microsoft recommends it- simply more efficient for 2K and XP. I'd even take a few FPS less in game just to have NTFS. Plus I like to do video editing, and there is a file size limit of 4 gigs with FAT32- so another reason to go with NTFS.
This wouldn't really affect the "FAT32 vs NTFS using extra resources" thing, but if you REALLY want fast file access, you might consider getting a RAID card (pretty inexpensive) and another hard drive and setup a striped array as your main C: partition. Then you don't have to worry about separating partitions for the pagefile to get better efficiency, because file access will already be smokin' enough to make you smile. There is no redundancy in a striped array, so there is techinically a greater chance for data loss, but I do regular backups, so no sweat.
