...I was thinking of playing with the editor this weekend to see how easy this WYSIWYG really is...but first...

...is there any of you out there who have never used a game editor before, to design levels etc...but have tried the FC-ED and had success???

I have never done any modding before,...but I have always wanted to. Farcrys Sandbox editor was a big factor in me getting this game,...i've always wanted to do my own levels.

I even designed a Farcry level on paper before I even donloaded the Sandbox Manual.

Anyways,...I played around with the editor today for a few hours. The scale was a little difficult to grasp at first,....I couldn't tell how big the land was,....but after a little while I got the hang of creating land, and eventually how to do texturing. The altitude/slope characteristics of texturing make it SO easy. I could just make beautiful maps forever with this thing.

Adding terrain features like foliage, vehicles, rocks, sounds, signs, etc. is fairly straightforward,...the only real confusing part is that there is literally HUNDREDS of things that you can add,...and each one has about 3 dozens possible parameters to it.

It's not difficult to figure stuff out,....but getting it all to interact correctly will be a scripting nightmare. But that's where your layers come into play.

USE THE LAYERS! There is no other way to keep your sanity. If you want to make an area a layer go ahead,....or you can break down each type of component into a layer too. I'll probably end up doing a little of both.
Put all of your foliage on it's own layer for instance,...vehicles on another, static objects on another, etc., etc.

The Sandbox guide has helped me alot,....especially the walkthroughs. If you even plan to just play around with the editor on your own time, make the effort to print out the guide,...it'll help alot.

Tomorrow i'm going to see if I can create an underground base.

Good luck on the underground base. Caves will be easy enough, but as for buildings, that's a whole new nightmare on a higher scale. Although being indoors for too long in this game is a BAD thing in itself.
