Thread: Riven, Myst, Exile worth it? | Forums

Ok, I played, or tried to play, Myst when I was eight. I got the little path to the island, the gear thing to open, and the space ship thing. The space ship totally confused me so I quit that and tried the now open gear. I went to another island with two completely different rooms, one appearing to be a torture chamber and the other a pompous prince's palace. ((Not trying to be mean to anyone, that's just how it looked to me))

Anyways, that totally frustrated me and I gave up. Now I'm 15 and I got URU for christmas. I played and really enjoyed it. Do you think that it would be good for me to re-try Myst and/or buy the others?

    Thanks, Elenwyn

    YES!!!!!

They aren't really the same as Uru, but you probably remember that from your first experience with Myst. Myst was my favorite! Very beautiful and lots of cool things to figure out. Riven is bigger and more difficult, but definitely one of the best adventure games ever made. Exile is different, again, because it was not developed by Cyan (who did the others) but I had a great time playing it. ANd it's very beautiful. I loved them all and recommend them highly!

Fortunately since the games are fairly old by computer game standards you should be able to pick them up quite cheaply (US$10 or so each). See if you can get the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD edition, which has all three games for about $20.

Uru is a bit different to the earlier games, though. The earlier games are all very puzzle-driven, with lots of puzzles to nut out as well as the beautiful scenery. There was none of the running and jumping that you have to do in Uru. The earlier games are probably more like the Kadish or Teledahn ages in Uru than like Gahreesen.
