    Blisters!

I have a little blister on my fingering hand index finger! My middle finger is bruised looking (redder at the tip) and my fretting index finger has lost all feeling in the tip. It gradually returns (with some tingling) but still hasn't fully recovered by the time I try Bass again that evening.

    Woah.

This is normal, more or less. Sounds to me you might want to back off on your playing a little bit, to give your fingers more time to heal up.
Keep playing, but shorten your session's time, as well as how often you have a session.
This will get bettter with time, you will bulid up sufficient strength and calluses to mitigate these kind of problems, you just need to be careful you don't overdo your practicing.

That's supposedly what SRV did. One of those kinda stories that may or may not be true.

Yeah, I've got a couple of blood blisters on my picking hand. I'm used to callouses on my fret hand from playing guitar but I don't remember them being this bad. It freaked me out at first and my fingers tips were sensitive, making finger picking slightly painful. I played through it and now they are completely numb. The blisters haven't burst and still have blood (I'm assuming) under them. I'm hoping I can just let them heal on their own at this point.

Should I take a break from bass even if they're not giving me pain? I typically play 1 to 2 hours a day. Maybe I should scale that back a bit or switch to guitar for a week.

I'd do that as well (take a break) except that I have the Bass on loan and wanted to return it (not hold on to it for months ).

OK so it's perfectly normal to have lost all sensations at the tips of my fretting fingers ! Only in this forum

If it doesn't hurt, then keep playing. One to two hours a day is not excessive. The blisters, if they haven't popped, will likely take care of themselves. Just be careful, it sounds like you're OK for now.

This whole thread makes me think of this old clip (possibly NSFW):
