Gamescom 2012 Hands-on: Far Cry 3 Singleplayer and Multiplayer

I am unsure if they even showed the multiplayer at Gamescom, info on this Multiplayer subject is very hard to find anything new - This article cropped up which I pasted below, saying that multiplayer was on show - not sure if it was still the old pre Alpha Build from April or if it is something new, it is good to hear about the dust effect (don't think that has been brought up / discussed in user made maps yet, I hope we get to use effects in our maps)
I can understand the lower resolution thing on consoles, that has me thinking we can cram in so much more in our user made maps - however I hope those powerful gaming rigs get higher resolution textures the same as in the single player game, no need to hinder that platform.

The info below can be found HERE.

Far Cry 3‘s breathtaking visuals and insane yet genius villain is what made it jump to the top of every FPS fan’s list back when it was announced in 2011. Now, with its release date quickly looming, we couldn’t wait to see how the game plays and feels.
First off, we had a chance to try the multiplayer. The game mode we played involved two teams trying to set the other team’s property on fire. Whichever team would achieve that first would have to try and capture the radio station in order to call in an airstrike to permanently transform the land into a burnt crisp.
There is definitely a visual downgrade between the single- and multiplayer; the textures are clearly in a lower resolution, as well as effects such as dust and water. Visuals aside, the multiplayer failed to impress us: whilst it was promoting teamwork and objective-focused play, it rarely felt like that. Most of the time, it would be easier to run around the map mindlessly killing enemy players rather than try to be a team player. Gameplay wise, there was nothing new – the game feels and plays like your average shooter, controls included. You kill an enemy, earn 100 points, repeat.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with the multiplayer per se, there is nothing particularly new and noteworthy about it either. Its core gameplay elements are lifted directly from other shooters, and the general experience you get out of it isn’t particularly fresh or rewarding. It looks like it will have appeal to players, but unless we see some new details about the multiplayer, I expect the Far Cry 3 servers to become ghost towns earlier than the developers thought.
The singleplayer demo that we were offered to play was the exact same one shown at this year’s E3 conference. It starts off with the tribal woman, the main antagonist’s sister, on top of you and topless (yay for boobies!). You then give a motivational speech to the tribe, and before you know it, you are off to catch the bad guy, Vaas.
The demo does a good job of showing off the stealthier and more action-focused gameplay, as well as the different environments, but fails to bring anything new on the table. For being an open-world game with sandbox-style missions, Far Cry 3 felt rather limited. More often than not, it felt like you were following a narrow corridor to your objective as there was little, if anything, to gain by taking a different path.

A demo is meant to make you want to buy the game; it’s meant to show you all the things it does best so you know what to expect out of it. Far Cry 3 isn’t a bad game at all. It’s still a very well designed shooter and will definitely be greeted by many positive reviews, but the demo failed at showing off what the game can really do. Now, we have our doubts on how open the missions will really be and how compelling the multiplayer will remain. It really felt as if the game had a lot of great ideas but was unable to truly bring them to fruition due to stale and overused gameplay decisions. This was our first true disappointment at Gamescom.

I also translated this via a Google search which was originally in French, interesting how he mentions jetski race in single player and also the challenge of trying to beat other online friends times at clearing enemies in another challenge - sounds like times / stats will be recorded on these challenges - Not sure what the issue is with the writer as I can't wait to get hold of this game and I also like the direction they are going in.

    Dr.Loser playing Far Cry 3

Ubisoft has kept his word! The enemies of Far Cry 3 does not forever respawnent, they do not cheat at races and car chases can recover their weapons without fear they enraillent immediately.

I played for about three quarters of an hour to the PC version (the pad ...) which allowed me to discover a game after all very similar to the previous episode. The graphics have hardly changed, and if there had not been a keyboard and a mouse placed in a corner, I do not doubt would be that it was the PC version. This is far from ugly, but there is not to rave about, which is unfortunate for a game where you spend much of your time walking on an island paradise.

The structure of the game is also unchanged. The story is told in the background with missions in relation to the big bad psychopath, but the action takes place on a large island with villages, outposts, there are even diamonds 2nd episode , replaced here by boxes of dollars. Finally, when I say "met", think about sums ranging from $ 15 to $ 30. In a crate. Lost in the middle of the jungle. I asked the guys what they were doing Ubi, he replied with an attempt at humor: "These are people who came to party and have forgotten their starting money." Then, seeing that it was not funny, he explained that Ubisoft wanted to encourage the player to explore and use the in-game economic system for immersion, we revert! And this is what makes me the most uncomfortable.

The bow is a vital new weapon: silent with arrows standard, it can also initiate explosive or fiery darts
    THIS IS A GAME

On one side was the level design director trying to make a remake of Apocalypse Now, with a character lost in a place on the fringes of civilization, double faced madness: that of his enemy, and delirium the gain gradually. Something very creepy, though oppressive, the nature of the human being, the monster that could become when fighting monsters and all that crap Nietzsche. And besides that, we ask developers to make a game inspired by GTA3 and Assassin's Creed. So you can walk everywhere, gathering plants to make potions, activate radio antennas to discover the card, but also do your shopping in the villages, play cards, or participate in mini games.
"To save his friends, Jason must do things that some might see and ask" Is this a bad person? "Jason is not a bad person, he does what must be done to survive and help his family . "- Mark Thompson, director level design
Ubisoft OK, you explain to me how I'm supposed to reflect on the notions of good and evil, and madness is watching me too to contemplate the abyss, while a NPC offers me to participate in a race jet ski? Seriously ... If the goal was to create a believable world is completely missed, we do not believe for a moment! I must say that Ubisoft makes no effort and does not hesitate to stick labels giant "THIS IS NOT A GAME" everywhere. For example, when you capture an enemy outpost, a stone giant red appears (?!) And you can click on to start a challenge. That we attended we teleport (?!) In a village full of enemies, with the aim of killing during a maximum time limit to beat the scores of your friends. And as if that was not enough to ruin the immersion, you have to shoot the blue cans labeled a clock to gain extra time. Rage proposed the same thing with the game Mutant Bash TV, but at least it was perfectly integrated in the universe. While there, you know ... A large amusement park

The world of Far Cry 3 is more like a cross between Dysney World and Zoo Thoiry than a wild island where survival is a struggle. There are villages with stalls where you can buy equipment, play poker, participate in races jetskis. And the outside world is anything but wild: there are roads everywhere, radio antennas, cabins with people who live their lives and animals, oh duffer ... In three quarter of an hour, I met a score of buffaloes , a tiger, a bear, a dozen warthogs, dog busy devouring a corpse and even a shark. This glandait peacefully at 1m from the beach, until I glue him three times in the head to make a holster. No, I do not delirium, after killing a creature, you can get your knife and after a ridiculously animated gore, remove meat, skin or whatnot. In any case, with the shark, I prepared a thing for me to carry an extra weapon like that, with my small hands, sitting on the beach, no hardware or anything. "THIS IS A GAME! '

Well, once we understand that Far Cry 3 is a video game, you may recognize certain qualities. Firstly, as I mentioned in the introduction, the main flaws of Far Cry 2 have been corrected. Once you capture an enemy outpost, just wait 10 seconds for your allies tumble drive and open a shop selling weapons, jetski stand and a bus stop so that you can then get there instantly. Gradually, you can clean the island of enemy presence is also indicated on the map in the form of colored areas. To believe that Netsabes play games unsavory is the same as in Assassin's Creed with clean and outposts radio antennas which show the map as you go. Among other improvements, you will be pleased to learn that cars now have a pattern of conduct interesting and enemy AI does not cheat you hurtling over more than 300 per hour. Knowing that you'll spend a lot of time on the road, it was important to know!

Correcting most of the defects of Far Cry 2, this new episode had to be much more enjoyable to play, but is it enough? Correct defects was the minimum, but it lacks the little extra that could make me want to play. Because from what we saw, Far Cry 3 is nothing else better Far Cry 2, and Far Cry 2 did not had really left a lasting impression, so I want to play his followers? The little extra could be the scenario based on the madness, but I do not see how Ubisoft could succeed in creating an atmosphere conducive to this theme in a world where it is stated everywhere "THIS IS A GAME! '

    Anyone for psyche gas war?

I think if they remove psyche gas mechanics from team multi-player this would fix alot of the issues this gentleman describes.

Apart from that may aswell have deathmatch and last man standing because thats what people did anyway play free for all so whats the point in forcing teamplay... People clearly went off not in a team.

Classic game mode like capture the flag... If it aint broke don't fix it

And a long game conquest mode of capturing or conquering an island entire with consequences to the end of game animations.

Bringing to fruition.... I give you this

You know where you are? ... Your in the jungle baby...... Your gonna die.....

    A good First-person Shooter should:

    - have precise, manual controls - e.g. no auto-aim
    - put balance, challenge and fun above realism
    - be full of fast-paced real-time action
    - let cunning, intelligence and skill decide who wins (PvP)
    - have simple mechanics: easy to learn but difficult to master

lets just click the link that the first review says, Look at the site, it is a nobody writing this. Could be a COD fanboy or anything. Also I bet games like Dead Island or Red Dead Redemption got bad reviews from this sort of site, Doesn't mean they are right at all. They might feel the game is like that, but others who actually think about what they are playing and how it is supposed to play out will love the game with a passion.

I think it's fine to have side quests and missions even if you teleport there but the HUD and it's features again and again scream this is a game....

Putting in a small cutscene of driving off or sneaking up to somthing through bushes before teleporting to a challenge might help the challenges seem more believeable and not so jarring even if it were a generic one.

Oh well, now the lid is off

Like Dapper said the writer of the 1st article might not have even been to Gamescon - no other site or news feed has mentioned playing multiplayer there, and if they have is it a new up to date build or the previous stuff they played at Pax (Pre-Alpha from over 4 months ago)

I am looking towards one of these shows giving us some new info that will get the taste buds working into overdrive - hopefully.

The first intervew the guy says "it felt very linear" but thats because it was a mission, not sandbox gameplay. Annoys me when people, who clearly don't know what they are talking about, put a game and its graphics down several months before its release.

WE LOVE YOU FAR CRY 3
