Alex said at comic con that they have tried to make Desmond awesome. and in another interview they say that ac3 will be the end of Desmond story. so he will be playable and apparently much better than before(aka not lame)

but to answer your question if they make Desmond "not be able to use" then that's fine i view hes story as an excuse to get to play the awesome assassins and their awesome story. they could stick Obama in the animus for all i care as long as his ancestor has a cool story. modern assassin doesn't appeal to me in this series because we already have splinter cell

at the end of the game we'll discover that TWCB were only using Desmond to ressurect them and another war between TWCB and humans will begin, the game ends and a playable epilogue is shown, 25 years after the events of AC3 where they'll show Desmond as the Mentor of the Order being killed and his son will become the next protagonist that'll use the animus to search the past for ways to stop TWCB...

I think there will be an open ending but Desmond should die. His story should end and there needs to be another person introduced that can continue the franchise to AC4. I won't miss Desmond much unless there is some master storytelling happening in AC3.

Yeah... something like that is bound to happen. Either that or he dies and Ubisoft makes things cheesy by making him come back to life at the last minute
