Interrogation (also called questioning or interpellation) is interviewing as commonly employed by officers of the police, military, and Intelligence agencies with the goal of extracting a confession or obtaining information. Subjects of interrogation are often the suspects, victims, or witnesses of a crime. Interrogation may involve a diverse array of techniques, ranging from developing a rapport with the subject to outright torture.

"Interrogation may INVOLVE!" hence my statement: They are both the same in different situations .

Hmm, I need to read the books, but I'll still choose the old method of interrogation over this one any day: grabbing the bad guy, followed by a verbal exchange most of the times filled with dark humour and being in control of the situation.

    Sam Fisher:Bad news.
Guard: Agh! I knew it! I knew there were ninjas around here!
    Sam Fisher: What?
Guard: Yeah, you've gotta be a ninja. How else could you sneak up and grab me like that?
Sam Fisher: Listen, I don't know what...
Guard: Wow! A real, live, ninja! I can't believe it!
Sam Fisher: Listen, I'm going to kill you if...
Guard: *Wow*! Killed by a ninja... cool!

Those were the times Now Sam Fisher shoots his target, beats him up and gets him killed and compromises the mission.

It becomes torture when severe pain is used to get answers.

If sticking a knife in someone is "interrogation", does hacking off a limb make that "enhanced interrogation"?
I agree with Om4zd, torture is a way of interrogation, used by many countries, it remains Interrogation since Sam is acquiring real information, it isn't a mindless act of violence with no valid reason or outcome.

As for hacking of limb, why would you do that ?!, there are alot more worse things, like taking off finger nails, electric shocks, impaling, cutting of fingers, hot metal ..........etc, while cutting a limb you really are putting yourself in a tight situation ((the guy may lose his consciousness from the pain and die due to bleeding)), unless you are ready to immediately take him to a hospital and continue later

and all of that remain Interrogation ((torture is a way, just like Blackmailing, aggressive talking, or talking, or even compromising)), and as far as I know, there some people who can go through that hell and remain silent about their countries big secrets.

Hacking looks more cool and flashy, isn't that what this game is about?

    Sam: Talk you *****!!
    Terrorist: No!
Sam: You asked for this you **** *starts chainsaw* (cut a hand by moving thumbstick)
    Terrorist: AAARGH!
    Sam: Talk!
    Terrorist: NOO!
Sam: Alright *revs once again* (cut a leg by moving thumbstick)
    ...
This goes on until all limbs are gone and the guy finally talks (realism, who cares). A multi-segment interrogation just like in Conviction. And then as a final option "Press X to pee or B to take into custody".

    I'll stay quiet now.
Warning: Everything above is an opinion
    The show must go on

"the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something"

The premise of Interrogation is a major drive/purpose of torture.

I think you misunderstood me on my original post. I'm not saying the two are the exact same thing.

I'm saying that each of the two (torture and interrogation) work from one another if the situation requires it.

There are levels to an Interrogation and torture is one of the higher levels needed to gain info etc....

Levels include simple questioning to threatening, bribing, offering (immunity from crime e.g.)...

    1. Torture is NOT related to just physical displeasure. Making someone sit for hours on end in a room can also count as psychological torture. Therefore even your technically correct definition of "Interrogation" is not void of torture, as a valid means to cross-checking a person - 'Aggressive'

    2. Would you agree that interrogators may use torture as part of an interrogation? Yes or No.

well I find cutting one finger at a time cooler than cutting the whole limb in one go, go for it Ubi LOL

and the game isn't all about flashy and cool, there are other subtle things too IMO.

BTW if you played The Punisher Game ((the TPS one)) it had a pretty good brutal interrogation system.

Dude I never said it was a mindless act of violence with no valid reason or outcome.

What Sam is doing is torture - the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain.

The premise of Interrogation is a major drive/purpose of torture.

It may be the initial purpose to begin with but when pain is introduced it becomes torture and then interrogation actually falls under torture.

Interrogation doesn't encompass torture but torture can encompass interrogation.

The definitions I posted for torture mention mental suffering, anguish and pain six times - which is about the same number of times physical suffering, anguish and pain is mentioned.

No. If interrogations lapse into torture the entire ordeal become torture and that encompasses the interrogation.
