I am! A very late diagnosis in my case. URU was my very first online game, and is likely to be the last unless/until it returns in the future. Interacting on a social basis has never been easy for me within the neuro-typical world, but URU gave me the chance to seem normal. It was great therapy while it was around!

Wow. It sounds like I have a lot of those symptoms. Is this something that I should look into?

    StrScape3000,
If you actually have Asperger's, there is no cure, it isn't a contagious disease. Although it does tend to show up among other family members (my father was undiagnosed all of his life). Do you have problems telling when someone is teasing you, do you have trouble reading the look on peoples faces. Do you feel more comfortable with computers than with people. Do you want friends but don't seem to have the ability to make them. Do you have trouble making eye contact with people when you are talking to them. You said you had a lot of the symptoms, but didn't indicate which ones or how many of them. Do you make up your own words (i.e. your own language), do you feel like an outsider, always looking in. I have been this way all my life. I have learned to hide out, always presenting something different to whomever I happen to be with. I am at the very high end IQ wise, of this syndrome, so I've been very successful in getting by. But, I wish I knew about this at least 30 years ago, when I could have worked at training myself to be less idiosyncratic. If you are still under 30, you might try to find a support group. But, be advised that this syndrome is all over the map in the number and intensity of symptoms, and most treatment is set up to handle children. My symptoms, while pronounced and easily identifiable, are mild in comparison to some. It is, after all, a form of autism. So you have to assess where you are and what you want out of life. Good luck!

Well I have been searching the net about this and other things. Even though I have quite a few of these things. I'm kinda leaning more towards Social Anxiety Disorder. It's hard to say. Some symptoms for the common cold are symptoms for something totally different. You're really not sure until you get a diagnosis.

Thank you so much for your help.

My step-son has it, PPD-NOS, actually. Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified. Missing one or two of the key symptoms. My wife probably has a residual case of it, she kind of blossomed out of it when she hit her teens, but probably a light diagnosis to begin with.

It would probably be easier for anyone with Aspergers to relate to others on a forum or in an on-line game due to the emotes, which limit the expanse of all possible emotional states of the speaker and the message. It also helps that most Aspergers' Syndrome diagnosed individuals tend to be good readers.

A person can be shy or introverted and have limited interests and not have Aspergers.

I run a social skills group in the Special Ed school where I am employeed, working with teens with Aspergers and related diagnoses. They tend to overlap a little with their deficits, but they have varied strengths.

Also, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Nonverbal Learning Disorder are just two other diagnoses where individuals have a difficulty with taking the perspective of others. ADHD would probably be due to the individual being unable to focus on a single thought of their own, let alone someone else's. NVLD would actually be a neuro-psychology diagnosis that is very similar to the psychiatric diagnosis of Aspergers. There is a debate about whether they are different at all.

To add more confusion to the mix, there is also a debate over "high functioning autism" and Aspergers and where to draw the line between the two.

Most people are not diagnosed properly with Aspergers because they usually seek social interactions and professionals are not aware of how Aspergers and Autism are different. They usually get labeled with three or more other diagnoses that might explain problem or idiosyncratic behaviors. (ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Depressive Mood Disorder, Bipolar Affective Disorder) See what I mean.

Did I mention that "sowkrdan" really means Social Worker Dan? Ok, I'll stop now. Feel free to send a private post if you have specific questions. Promise I won't bill you!
