What are your thoughts on the Ouya? I'm personally really excited! Just pledged for their Kickstarter campaign so I could have my own Ouya console when it comes out in March. Very excited about how open it is -- this is gonna be great!
Given the incredibly short time frame they're giving from where they are now, to where they say they're going to launch, and the lack of games committed to it, I just can't bring myself to give them money ahead of time.
If it ends up being everything they say it's going to be, that's awesome, but at this point, I'm extremely skeptical.
Seems like a great idea for start up game developers. It will be interesting to see how far this console will go in terms of development outside the realm of Indie gaming. On the grounds of the notion that the console is "rooted" giving room for not only software but hardware manipulation (hacking); I'm really hesitant to believe that large company's with fairly large wallets (Ubisoft, EA, or Sega-just to name a few) will really put any priced content on the new android based console. With that said, no blockbuster titles on the OUYA, not at least anytime soon that is. Its big business and I don't think It would be profitable for putting lets say Ghost Recon Future Soldier on the OUYA console-if one of the OUYA's selling points is a rooted(unlocked)(manipulated console), possibly allowing users to download and access that content for free
"-but really who is to say that's a bad thing at all." says every gamer in the world.
I'm just not sure how they plan to pay for marketing, yes I understand they are going after convenience and accessibility but with a console gaming system being so cheap how will they make a profit. So for gamers this is great like rabbit said but for their company, will it be possible to sustain sales? Then again who would ever think that the #1 PC game in the world right now would be a free to play game and they seem to do pretty well in profits. You just never know, I guess we will just have to see what happens. As a gamer I am really excited and curious to see what happens with this system.
I've had the Ouya on my radar for a while now and I really want it to succeed.
I love the idea of making it accessible to smaller dev teams without a publisher and that EVERY console is a dev kit.
As a student, that sounds incredibly appealing to me.![]()
I am intrigued by the concept, but it'll come down to the actual implementation and construction of the unit. While it has the potential, it will gain some legs if we see major dev support from larger companies like the aforementioned ones. I am skeptical as to how well the Android operating system will work out in the long run. I know graphics aren't everything, but there is a large chunk of the gaming audience where that is an important feature for them, so hopefully it'll deliver something at least on par with where Nintendo currently is (which is sadly behind PS3/Xbox).
It has potential, it just has to be executed perfectly due to the unique nature of the Ouya as a whole.
Massive thanks to EmperorxZurg for the sweet sig!
