Here's the thing with TalkBass. Yes, for reference purposes, it's great. You can find information on just about anything there. The community is huge. However...it is extremely cliquish and the moderators are the biggest ******bags on the internet. They banned Jeff Berlin -- JEFF BERLIN! One of the the greatest living bass players. All because he told off some members who were harassing him. That's like having Micky Mantle agree to play on your softball team and then benching him for not making batting practice.
The thing is, on most forums, the one who starts the fight always wins -- because it's not until someone responds that THEY are the one considered to be elevating it to an argument. It's absurd. And the mods love to enforce the "rules." They're total bureaucrats. They'd make good nazis.
So what you wind up with is mostly newbies, sycophants, bullies and a few cool guys. Also, a good amount of members LOVE to dismiss anyone is isn't either famous or a member of the herd. If a member does a cover of "Boogie Oogie Oogie" he's sure to get high praise. But if someone posts anything from an "outsider" LOOK OUT FOR THE HATE. They'll find ANY way possible to cut them down,. No matter how good or great they may be, they'll find something to knock.
So talkbass is by far, not a community of supportive musicians. It's mostly a club of bitter, petty threatened amateurs, with a handful of pros and some smart decent people. it's a shame the way it's run.
BTW, I've been banned -- several times. LOL. I just wanted to talk to some members and started a few threads that got a great response but the **** mods had to slap it down. Incidentally, It's easy enough to get back on for research purposes though. Just empty the cookies on your computer and you get back on.
I've found it to be a great board. Like any public forum you're best off ignoring the jerks.
That's a lot of baloney. Seems to me it's just sour grapes on your part for being banned. I find the mods on TB to be immensely fair, and if you got banned several times, then you likely deserved it. Your other characterizations of TB are way off bass Oh, and Jeff Berlin, regardless of how Legendary he is, got kicked ouff because he behaved likea jerk. The man has an ego the size of Canada.
Do us all a favor, this is your first post, don't make this kind of negativity a habit, or you'll end up banned here too. Not a good start, my friend.

So you're threatening me for having an opposing opinion? That's hilarious. And sure, Berlin can be acerbic but if you can justify keeping one of the worlds premier bassist out of your treehouse, you have delusion beyond my comprehension. Look bro, no sour grapes at all. I can still view the site. I just want to share and talk about music with other bassplayers and the mods won't let that happen over a silly incident years ago that wasn't even my doing. Since then I've had no problems when I log on but once they find out it's from the same computer they **** me down. I think that's just being ****ish to be ****ish. I believe the site could be a lot better and attract more pros if they didn't take this hallroom monitor approach. And yes, the members can be petty toward anyone doing something outside their comfort zone. I've seen people attacked because they didn't use the right tone or they played a song with a different approach. There was a vid of a 15 year old kid who was amazing and people had to say he "didn't groove" -- for no other reason other than it's subjective and they had to find something to knock to feel better about themselves. i hate that kind of behavior. So i repeat, great site with great info and some great people, but it does have a schoolyard bully attitude to it.
plangentmusic - while you may have a legitimate gripe with Talkbass.com, the fact that your only 2 posts here are about your negative experience there makes it seem as if the ONLY reason you came here was to badmouth them. That makes your complaint less legitimate in my eyes.
Had you been here on this forum for a while, talking about Rocksmith before bringing it up, I might have taken your complaint a bit more seriously, but I'm tending to think you may have deserved your banning there.
I haven't spent a lot of time on talkbass, but from my experience there it's like any other forum. Lots of great people who are more than willing to have a civil discussion and help out, with a proportionately tiny number of arrogant jerks. If you can't ignore the jerks on the internet, you are going to have issues enjoying yourself.
My pick-up toggle switch has 3 modes: Swank, Extra Swank, and Super Swank
I'll admit, the topic caught my eye. I really don't care to voice complaints about message boards jerks, it's just that talkbass pretty much owns the internet bass community and I do a lot of bass related stuff on the internet, so it's an issue that's close at hand. I also found it interesting that a forum dedicated to an art form would ban those who would be the biggest proponents of that form, not unlike a forum dedicated to basketball banning Michael Jordan for using inappropriate language. LOL.
Its possible this Berlin fellow got banned simply for the mustache.

Well, that's just it. If Jordan had indeed violated the TOS and used inappropriate language on your imaginary basketball forum, the mods would have had every right to ban him, he broke the rules. I don't care how famous or "special" one is, if one breaks the rules they need to be treated like anybody else.
