Thread: Smoke + Wall = Frozen merc? | Forums

  1. #1
Since this is my first post, let me just sing UBI's praises a bit on how amazing the multiplayer is for this game. I have learned to get by with 4 hours of sleep a night so I can play PT non-stop.

Now, I have encountered many of the glitches posted in other threads, and they are annoying and mar an otherwise perfect game. I have every confidence UBI is working on them though, no sense adding my complaints. There is one in particular I have found quite lethal however and I haven't seen it mentioned yet. Am I alone in this one?

I'm a merc engaging an aggro spy (as usual) and he starts dropping smoke all over the place while running circles around me (as usual). Normally I'm quite capable of dealing with this and can hold my own in this situation. But in the last four days or so, I've been hitting some sort of problem where as the smoke is dropping, I get frozen in place. I can still shoot but I can't move and when I try to turn it just rotates the camera around, not my gun. This only lasts for 2 or so seconds, but in that time the spy will usually get behind and grab me. If I make it past that 2 second mark, everything returns to normal.

I have witnessed a glitch which acts likes this (freezing the merc), but as far as I've seen that one is permanent, unlike mine. And no, it's not the spy grabbing me, I know what that feels like and this ain't it. This only happens when I get smoked (even if the spy is not close), and I really think being close to a wall seems to set it off more often. I had never encountered this before a few days ago, and now all of a sudden it's happening a few times a game. I'm getting more then my fair share of neck re-adjustments as a result.

Has anyone else encountered this? I just need to know I'm not alone...

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are talking about, but, as a Merc if you enter into a cloud of smoke of chaff, your movement will become extremely slow. I'm not sure why this is, it seems to have no basis in reality, especially in the chaff scenario, however it is in the game. A new problem that has happened to me twice now as a Merc is a graphic glith problem while using motion detection. Part of the graphics will freeze, but some will continue to update. It is similiar to the flash bang effect, but with the motion vision. It has only happened twice, and could not determine what caused it. I play the X-Box version.

Yeah, but that's not what's going on here. I'm talking full on frozen. I can turn the camera and scroll right over my gun and "look" behind my head. It keeps happening to me tonight, I'm getting really frustrated!

i know what your talking about man. its not a slowdown thats built into the game what do you think youd walk like going through choking gas? yeah i was against a wall and got smoked on cinima and i stuck there until i got killed about 5 minutes later. i could shoot and change vision but i couldent use my secondary or move. it was wierd possibly something to be addressed. this is a pc version problem i think

temporary sig a better will come.

I'm playing the Box version, and the glitch you described is definitely in it. I think my glitch is a shorter version of the same thing really, it seems to have the same effects.

The merc outfits are wired up with fiberoptic bands that help monitor the mercs health, cathartise dendrites in wounded areas, facilitate armor plate movement, and regulate body temperature. When chaff, or smoke (which is conditioned with EMF particles) goes off, this causes the wiring to go into shock, forcing the merc to move at a slowed pace because he is straining against a suddenly hardened armor suit.

^ The above comes straight from my (_._) ^

    Interesting.

This Merc slowdown scenario plays out for me every time I am engaged in this manner. I thought it was a combination of normal game mechanic and my own ineptitude until last night, and now today after reading this post.

Last night, struggling with said effects I was mashing my charge key in an attempt to move quickly from a smoke 'nade. My partner, who had a clear view of me, says "Dude, hit your charge key" "Argh I am!" ..... SLEEPING.

In short, I get gassed, I move at a snails pace. Is this as intended?

Yes, you are supposed to move quite slowly through gas. Though the charge should still work for you. Charging through gas is one of the best ways to deal with it, followed by a merc quick turn at the end to catch the spy inevitably trying to grab your neck. It's one of those close combat techniques you need to practice to survive. A tazer will help too, usually the spy is quite close in these situations.

As for the glitch. After running into it constantly last night and discussing it with people in the room, I've come to the conclusion that it must be the same glitch that causes the permanent freeze. I guess my Box just handles it better and it's normally only temporary for me. I suppose that makes me lucky.
We think it must be something to do with all the particles involved in the cloud. I don't know why it's only just now doing it. Perhaps I'll air blast out my XBox.
