No I am not kidding. I do it all the time before installing a new game or new program. Very usefull if one does a lot research on the Net. Some malwares are almost impossible to delete and do leave entries in the registry even if you succede deleting them.

Tutorial for creating them and using them when necessary...

Btw, Heimdall did suggest that your post a copy of a "full" DXDIAG report of your pc. See near the bottom of his post... click here

Note: if one post is not enough for the complete copy, use two posts if necessary.

Additionnal question: is your desktop screen resolution same as your game resolution ????

Creating a restore point and actually being able to restore s system with one are two entirely different matters. If you've been able to restore a system with a restore point more than once, you're the first person I've ever heard of who had been able to do so....

Here's the DXDIAG report Heimdall asked for:

If your computer is not functioning correctly, you can use these restore points to return Windows XP to a previous state when your computer was functioning ok (read: normally).

It is not exactly the same as a full system repair or reinstallation. It is a "rollback" to a time when it was working ok. Like before deleting a file or before the system was corrupted by a malware or by a not too advance virus and when you have still access to your control panel. If you have a friend who is a computer geek, ask him to explain it to you in more details.

You could also try a Google search for "pc restore-point" and you will learn that it is a very common subject.

    Good luck.

Well, call it want you want, "full system repair", "re-installation" or "rollback", it's been my experience that restore points rarely, if ever, work. That being the case, thanks for the good luck wish just the same. I'll need all the good luck I can get to get Myst V running!

Well, I'm a firm believer in the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Um, OK. I guess everything is just peachy keen, then. Have fun!

    Regarding System Restore:

-- System Restore will usually fix an operating system problem (and some types of program issues), but only if you have a known-good Restore Point from before the problem(s) occurred.

-- System Restore will usually NOT fix the type of problems causing your CTD with EoA (out-of-date drivers, etc.). See the suggestions, below.

-- I've never been able to successfully restore from normal Windows on my Win XP machine. The only way System Restore works for me is to boot up in Safe Mode, using the Safe Mode boot option. (See A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP for details. Note that you'll need to press F8 multiple times during bootup to access Safe Mode.)

    Suggestions:

    1. Update your video driver to the latest from NVIDIA for your GeForce FX 5700LE chipset. For details on downloading driver packages and installation, see Myst V: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP.

    2. Update your sound driver to the latest from Creative for your Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS chipset, starting here.
-- a. For the Audigy 2 ZS, go here.
-- b. For the Audigy 2 ZS Gamer, go here.

    3. Unless you've done them very recently, carry out all of the steps under Overall Windows and Hard Disk Tune-up in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP. This may or may not solve the CTD problem, but your PC will run *much* better!

    4. If the above don't help, re-install EoA from a clean boot. For details, see Sections 6, 7, and 8 under Installing and Re-Installing EoA in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP.

You are out of line with your sarcasm. You would do well to take some words of wisdom from Ben Franklin to heard. He said that "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt".

Sorry, my "signoff" was only intended to be a slight tweak, and referred to the fact that you still have IBM software present on your Windows (i.e. Intel, maybe) computer. "vpd.properties" was installed with Myst IV, and was contained in that installer for another operating system (I think Linux, but not sure). I do not know whether re-naming that file protects your computer's OS from its possible deleterious effects. If you read Heimdall's recommendations and notes regarding that file, go by what he says... he is the expert on this forum. And as I "mouthed" previously, have fun!

Hi - this is a known problem with Myst V, AND there's a very simple workaround (no need for system rebuilds etc etc)...

This crash happens in Vista and Windows 7 when the game runs through the once-only hardware checking. The game is a lot older than today's hardware and it seems it trips up when it doesn't recognise certain pieces of kit (I suspect the graphics card or multi-CPU config). Anyway, the workaround is to thwart this check by adding a temporary config file (which you can download - see below) to your user folder (so the game thinks the check has already been done). You can then configure the game to work on your computer as normal.

Check the bottom of the first (very long) post in this thread at MystCommunity: http://www.mystcommunity.com/board/i...7-incl-64-bit/ (it's labelled Vista 64-bit but the problems named apply equally to Windows 7). At the bottom of that first post, you'll see "Myst V - End of Ages" together with details of the fix. There is a config file attached to the post that you can download and install as instructed in the post.

    Good luck!
