Used is a pretty popular way to go if you're looking for a bargain, but it's not necessarily the only way to get a steal. Just look for promos and know how to take advantage of them. For example I recently purchased a American Special Strat that retails at $900. Fender's summer sale took $100, then did a coupon search and found a 12% off coupon from GuitarCenter bringing the price down to $704. Then I took that and showed it to zZounds that does pricematching and they offered me an even lower price as a result. Paid $680 ($220 off), which is about the price of getting it used.
If you are ok buying used then you can get an a good deal and perhaps even talking the price even lower, but if you're like me and get paranoid buying used gear it doesn't have to have deep consequences on your wallet.
