Thread: Always online DRM not patched out of this game? | Forums

Question Always online DRM not patched out of this game?

I wanted to buy this game on Steam so I did research online and found many articles stating that always-online DRM was patched out of Splinter Cell Conviction. I just completed downloading the game and am trying it out, and always-on DRM is present! I'm pretty disappointed with this, what's going on? I can't find a version number anywhere so I don't know if it's been patched or up to date. When I first launched the game the Uplay launcher said something like "downloading game files" for about 10 seconds. I don't know if that was a patching process or what. Can anyone help me out?

I just tried to manually patch the game with the 1.04 patch and it says that the game is not installed. I thought it'd be worth a try.

From what I understand, the retail version of Conviction has been updated to 1.04 and always-on DRM has been removed, but the Steam version is still at 1.02 and has always-on DRM. Can you address this for Steam users? The same thing happened with Driver San Francisco when the retail version was patched in January and the Steam version didn't get updated until June when people complained on Twitter. It seems Ubisoft has been neglecting a large segment of their audience who purchase their games on Steam.

It is patched out of this game. They did an update a week ago and silently put it back. I haven't found anything official about this. It was right when the servers were down for 10 hrs on Sunday July 15, 2012. They introduced their own version of steam overlay and chat.

The always online drm is back. However I don't see how you can just take it out, put it back, whenever you so please. License agreement or no license agreement. Also with no statement or notice to anyone. I bet there's a statement somewhere about their new copycat steam overlay.

I don't like how my own stats can be recorded and used to determine what I am and am not capable of. It's an invasion of privacy. And it's not just to keep people from piracy. It can be used for many other purposes. Anyway I'm not worried about it as it can never affect me .

Three people just told me their Steam versions work offline. In my Support folder there is a file called "ReleaseNotes_Patch102.txt" but inside the gameinfo.ini file it says "version=1.04" I have no idea what's going on.

Ubisoft support Twitter told me that he was under the impression you only need to be online the first time to register your game and generate save data, then you can play offline. There's no straight answer. I submitted a support ticket, I'll see what they say.

During the game it's constantly communicating with ubi's server, so ...

I got my game to work offline finally, no thanks to Ubisoft support. Uplay 2 was blocking my game from getting patched and having the DRM removed. I uninstalled Uplay 2.0.4 and then allowed Conviction to install an older version of Uplay 1.x. Then my game patched, removing the always-online DRM, and then Uplay updated itself back to 2.0.4. Works fine now, but something is really wrong with Uplay if it's not allowing me to update my games.

    Ubisoft disappoints me

So I bought SC: Conviction and AssCreed: Revelations a few day ago. (these are my first 2 games that I actually purchased from ubi via Steam).

I just got some time to try out Conviction and after the first mission, I started seeing the 'attempting to connect online - QUIT TO DESKTOP' message every few seconds. I have a 4mbps connection here in Pakistan but internet can get really unstable at times (very often).

When I bought this game, I thought it had the always online DRM removed but here it is. I couldnt do anything now but quit the game because of the annoying prompt appearing every few seconds.

Seriously, Ubisoft. If you listen to your customers ever, just see how much everyone on Reddit hates these draconian tactics of yours. I paid for this game in the hopes that I'd contribute to the devs a bit, but with the always on DRM prompt disrupting my gaming experience, I feel you people are actually mocking your customers for paying for these games.

Now I'm disappointed that I paid for this game. I'm sure a cracked version of it on some pirate site wouldn't have any such annoying prompts. Please ubisoft, remove the annoying internet check prompt. We paid for this game, the game launches from your uPlay app adding a second step every time we want to play... why annoy your legit customers any further with the online check prompts and disrupt their gemepaly? This i a 2010 game and I'm sure the mass pirates have moved to newer games so your game isn't any risk.
