Save file issues and Assassins Creed 2

I played Assassins Creed 2 on and off yesterday, and I was able to start the game from where I started every time. Because of this, I simply expected that the game autosaved after I finished a memory.
But when I fired up the game today (PC, purchased off Steam) my file was on Memory 2. What's going on here?
I was wondering if there was an option to save the game manually, because I never was able to find it, and I sort of assumed it'd be obvious. If there is autosave, it seems to have failed me in this case. I would like it if I could get some assistance. I don't mind playing the game again, I just don't want to do it a third time.

Bump. I have this problem, and it's super frustrating. To lose 8 hours of gameplay on a game like assassins creed 2 is horrible. All that glyph and feather finding... To be honest, this is something that will stop me playing the game. Ubisoft, any ideas on how to get the save back?

    Bump for answer.

This has happened TWICE for me and is seriously making me angry. Unless problem can be resolved, there is very little chance I will purchase anything that has to do with this UPlay business or even Ubisoft in general for fear of this happening on a different game.

I have to agree. I've seen this posted on many forums but with no fixes or intervention from Ubisoft/Steam moderators. Boycott Ubisoft games IMO. This Uplay blows.

As with everyone else I also had the same issue multiple times. (I also bought this from steam)
Maybe I just got lucky but this is what I did to get my saved game back.

    1. Run the game. (Uplay pops up) press Play
    2. Go to "Story mode" and double check to see if your save is missing or reverted to an older spot.
    3. Exit back to the main menu and "quit to windows" *Do not close uplay*
    4. Close "after game report".
Once I did that the cloud tried to resync.
    5. Run the game again after its done resyncing and your saved file might be there.

After I did this and played around for a while I closed AC2 and changed the uplay from cloud saving via the settings menu so it would save on my local drive.

Not sure if I just got lucky but the saved game that came back was the one I played the longest. It was also my first run of the game.

Another odd thing, although my saves are now stored locally I have no idea where. A quick check in the appdata\local\ubisoft game launcher folder did not have any of the saved files that would normally be there.

    Hope that helps.

Could anyone confirm that after they've disabled the cloud sync, they haven't had the problem anymore? Or does the game also mess up the local saves?

Wow, I was really enjoying the game until this problem struck me. I got booted all the way back to the start of the game - lost about 12 hours of progress. Exiting and restarting brought me a few hours ahead to a previous save, but that's still a huge amount of lost progress. It's very sad that an excellent game has to be marred by such a game breaking issue, and from what I can tell this has been an ongoing problem for a number of years now, so I guess Ubisoft aren't too concerned about it.

It just baffles me that someone thought this was a good system.

I have the same issue unfortunately, and I have 0 desire to replay at the moment. I have tried turning off sync and running on local files, I have tried deleting local files and running with sync on. I do not have the "storage" folder that so many speak of and no temp files to be found, including in the AppData directory for the game launcher. I had opened and closed the game multiple times without any issue at all, until it just randomly happened. I was on Road Trip I believe, just got my Medici cape. I have Windows 7 and the game was purchased through Steam in the bundle. I did put in a ticket to Ubisoft, but... we'll see how that goes.

I fear it'll go like it did for this guy:
