Hi, vivz! Unfortunately, they've changed authentication procedure. Now you can't start Ubisoft Steam game without Steam client. Look here:
CD key error when playing through Steam

Ups. This answer is no longer available.

Anyway old windows shortcuts for Ubisoft games don't work after Uplay 2.0 update, you should make special Steam shortcut (like this) which will start Steam client and then will start the game. Of course, It's stinks!

    P.S:
I've said about this issue to Ubisoft tech support, said it's not comfortable enough, cause you can't start the game in offline mode without Steam (but you could do it before Uplay 2.0 and you can still do it in case of Ubisoft retail games), and Steam offline mode doesn't work properly very often. Tech support guy said that they will think about this problem. May be they will change this, but I'm not sure.

    Allright

All week i work 12 hrs a day and on weekends , the only two days when i can relax and play some games, if this is what UBISOFT wants to do with their products by making it inaccessible for a legitimate user like me, i am gonna remove the game and install the pirated version.

Hello vivz_kestrel... don't you think you might be over overreacting just a-bit? I completely understand why you would be upset that you can't play your game, but you need to calm down and try and figure out a solution to your problem/issue... going off and making claims that you will install the "pirated version" if you don't get it working is just juvenile. In fact, I am almost willing to bet that your problem/issue (along with many others that are complaining about the Ubisoft/Uplay update) is directly related to "pirated Ubisoft software". "Cracked" or "pirated" Ubisoft games/software will wreak complete havoc on your "Legitimate" Ubisoft games/software. My only suggestions are to try un-installing all your Ubisoft "pirated" games and re-install only your Legit. Good luck.

Green.Hornet, nope, vivz is absolutely right here. After Uplay 2.0 update you can't start some Ubisoft Steam games from exe file or standard windows shortcut. Uplay launcher asked to enter your CD key again and said that cd-key is already used, if you enter it. I know this, cause I have two Steam Ubisoft games: Driver:San Francisco and Assassin's Creed:Revelations. Both games has the same cd-key issue. And both games work perfectly if I start them from Steam client or via Steam shortcut.

Retail versions don't have this issue! I have several retail Ubisoft games, including SC:Conviction. But vivz_kestrel has Steam version of SC:Conviction. I know this, cause we know each other.

UPDATE: Error: Key Already in Use
