The following versions of Uru have been released for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP:
-- Uru: Ages Beyond Myst or Uru: ABM (CD)
-- To D'ni, first Expansion Pack (download only)
-- Myst Uru: The Path of the Shell or PotS, second Expansion Pack, also contains To D'ni (download or CD - CD recommended)
-- Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles or CC (two CD's containing original Uru: Ages Beyond Myst and To D'ni + PotS)

While there's no function key for saving game progress, all versions of Uru autosave on-the-run during game play. However, unlike many other games, with Uru you can't directly access saves as such from an in-game menu. Until you solve the Desert Cleft puzzles to obtain all of the initial seven Journey Cloths and link to your Relto (personal Age), you'll begin each Uru session where you started in the Desert. Thereafter, you'll start the game at your Relto, from which you can use the Linking Books to link to the Ages you've visited.

Uru may be installed in one of:

    C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst
    C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - To D'ni
    C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Path of the Shell
    C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Complete Chronicles

In your Program Files Uru folders, there's a \sav folder with two subfolders. This is where your game progress is autosaved, as well as where your player (avatar) settings and general game settings are stored. With a default install as an example, the path is C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst\sav\<hash>\current. (<hash> is your player/avatar name in hexadecimal code.) If these folders disappear or become corrupted, you lose everything you've done in the game.

Additionally, depending on the version of Uru you're playing, your KI images and Journal entries are saved in \KIimages and \MyJournals, respectively.

To back up \sav and the other folders, simply copy them to somewhere else on your hard disk. A folder created specifically for that purpose is good. Note that if you've moved music files into \MyMusic, you should also back up this folder. Using Uru: Ages Beyond Myst as an example:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Right-click on Start, then click on Explore to open a Windows Explorer session.
-- c. Click on your main C: drive heading to highlight it.
-- d. On the top taskbar, click on File > New > Folder.
-- e. Type a folder name in the New Folder box, for example, Uru Game Saves.
    -- f. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst\sav, and right-click on the \sav folder.
-- g. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Copy.
-- h. Navigate to your new C:\Uru Game Saves, and right click on this folder.
-- i. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Paste. This will copy \sav and its subfolders to C:\Uru Game Saves.
-- j. Repeat steps f. through i. for \KIimages and \MyJournals if these folders are present, and \MyMusic if you've moved music files into that folder.
-- k. You should now have C:\Uru Game Saves\sav (and maybe \Kiimages, \MyJournals, and \MyMusic). Check all of the files in these folders and their dates/times against the same folders and files in C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst. Everything should match.
-- l. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.

After you create C:\Uru Game Saves (or whatever folder you create), do only steps a., b., and f. through l.

To copy your game progress files back to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst:
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Right-click on Start, then click on Explore to open a Windows Explorer session.
-- c. Navigate to C:\Uru Game Saves (or whatever folder you created), and right-click on the \sav folder.
-- d. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Copy.
    -- e. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst, and right-click on the \Uru - Ages Beyond Myst folder.
-- f. In the resulting drop-down menu, click on Paste.
-- g. In C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst, click on \sav to highlight it, then press the Delete key and click on Yes.
-- h. In C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Cyan Worlds\Uru - Ages Beyond Myst, right-click on the \Copy of sav folder created in step f., and click on Rename in the resulting drop-down menu.
-- i. Rename the folder to "sav" (without the quotes), then press Enter.
-- j. Repeat steps c. through i. for \Kiimages, \MyJournals, and \MyMusic if you also backed up those folders.
-- k. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.
    -- l. Play Uru.

The best thing to do is to back up your game progress and other folders every time you're done playing for the day. Then, if you end up with corrupted or lost \sav files, you can copy the latest saved \sav back to your Program Files Uru folder, and you're back in business without losing too much game progress.

Retaining the most recent 3 or 4 copies of \sav and the other folders is a good idea, in case your latest set of files was corrupted and you didn't realize it. That way, you're much more likely to have an uncorrupted set available.

    NOTES
    -------
    1. After you're done playing any version of Uru, *always* reboot before doing anything else with your computer. If you don't reboot, lockups, freezes, crashes, etc., can occur. Like right in the middle of that long word processing document you were almost ready to save....

    2. When you exit Uru, use the following options in the order shown:
-- a. The [X] icon in the lower right corner of the screen (hover the cursor over this area to bring up icons)
    -- b. Alt-F4
    -- c. Task Manager
    ----- 1. Click on Ctrl-Alt-Del > Applications tab > Uru task > End Task.
    -- d. Computer reset button
    -- e. Computer power switch
