And that concern is that even with all of the "listening" Ubisoft has said it's being doing with Blacklist, the game is still going to be cut of the same cloth as Conviction.
Granted, we must give the team a chance, because I truly believe UbiZack is not joking when he says stealth is back, so I will be reserving any judgement until after they've decided to show us their hand...
Now we can all argue over the validity of M&E and removal of gameplay mechanics until our faces turn blue, but the biggest disappointment that most people felt with Conviction was not about the inclusion of these mechanics... it was that the whole frame the game was set in was simply not engaging because of the completely unbelievable manner in which all the characters behaved.
Now SolidSage has highlighted how the context of Splinter Cell (elite NSA field-operative) is unbelievable in reality (because the US will always outhack anyone), but it's not a million miles away from being believable. And it's a gripping context in itself.
But when people talk about Splinter Cell being realistic & believable, they mean the overarching story and events the characters go through, and the actions they take during those events, make you think that "This could just happen in reality"
This did not happen with Conviction AT ALL.
Gameplay changes aside, even with the return of body moving, whistling, stickey shockers etc, from what we've seen, the whole framework the game is going to be placed in is going to be another over-the-top, cliched action Hollywood blockbuster.
Now, granted the first peek we got was just that - a demo showing an unfinished level, designed to showcase what they've developed.
But already there are some very real concerns about the integrity of the story.
This thread has already highlighted a few:
- Sam is calling an airstrike within about 20meters of his posititon.
- Jadid must be kept alive, yet Sam has to breach the room and starts shooting in his direction
- "Jadid is on his way", but then he's already in the room two minutes later....AFTER a A-S-Missile strikes the courtyard outside. Remember when Shetland fled the entire bathhouse after a few bullets were fired??
- Sam starts to actively interrogate the target on-site... EVEN when he is supposed to be taking him alive, most likely FOR INTERROGATION. If the plan is to kidnap him, why isn't he doing just that?
- Sam gets so clumsy with his gun that he lets Jadid shoot himself with it......seriously?
These all point towards the same cliched Hollywood action movie approach that was forced upon you in Conviction, regardless of how you played the game.
Now I would be amazed, surprised and completely delighted IF you could approach that situation in any of the three styles and get a completely different scenario and cutscene.
But that means that EVERY scenario will need to give you 3 ways of being played out, and I don't think Ubisoft will be going down that route, because it opens up a whole maze of paths the story could take - meaning it would be a mess.
It would be ideal - even BEAUTIFUL - if the set pieces and cutscenes you received reflected how you played the game, but I don't think that's going to be the case.
