Just saw this again on DVD.
Is anyone else deeply disappointed with this film? Perhaps it's because I've read the original books (well, almost all of them, a couple of them more than once) and had some pre-conceptions. However, that aside, I don't think the film had a decent, compelling storyline. It didn't draw you in and the pacing was off. Russell Crowe did a commendable job as Jack Aubrey (a very good bit of casting) and Paul Bettany was passable as Stephen Maturin. The character studies were also quite well done, if a bit spotty and one-dimensional in places (I think you appreciate the depth of the characters more if you've read the books). Overall, I came away feeling quite disappointed that there wasn't more meat to the film, in the form of an actual story.
