i have the steam version of the game and when i click play it brings up the ubisoft game launcher saying checking for updates, then goes to a screen that says
"A Service is unavailable
A Ubisoft service is unavailable at the moment. please try again later"

this is the first time in a few months that I've tried to play it and i never had trouble with it before.

is it something todo with my computer or are the servers down??

I assume there must be a server issue as I can't connect either and there are a few earlier posts highlighting a similar problem. I get the following error:

An internet connection is required to play this game. Failed to connect to the Ubisoft master servers. Please verify that your internet connection is functional and try again.

It would be nice if there was some way that we could check the server status online!

I cannot connect either. Hopefully Ubisoft will give some information about the downtime of the servers...

Servers back online now.. I'm connecting again without a problem.

bit unrelated but i need help, when i start the game up the ubisoft autopatcher opens and starts to update i allow it to get to 100% ten it fails and i select quit open the game correctly yet nobody is online>>> ehlp

Are you running the game in Windows 7?
If so, go to your start menu, open your documents, open the folder "Settlers 7", open the folder "logfiles", open the newest log file which is named something like: Settlers7_AGame_2012-06-25_22-45-58.
In the first line of the file you can see what version you have.
The first line in my file is: THE SETTLERS VII - Paths to a Kingdom version 1.12.1396 (Undefined, S7_Patch, 168318)
so I have version 1.12.1396. This is the latest version.

If you do not have the latest version, you can find patches at:

You will not see if anyone is online unless you have a list of contacts. I have sent you a friend request , or at least I have sent someone named ThainII a friend request.
