That video does not help. It assumes that QT can be opened, to change settings. I cannot open QT 4.1.2

I appreciate the help, but it throws the same error.

Correct. I can't interact with QT 4.1.2, player or otherwise. All attempts create the same error.

Do you know what Windows Installer version you have ?

I beleive that you will need Windows Installer 3.1 or better.

Windows Installer 5.0 (scroll down) is included natively in Windows 7.

If Windows Installer is corrupted, you can repair it by running sfc.exe /scannow using Start > Run.

I'm still told that 4.1.2 is installed incorrectly.

As a note, I've heard from the official support ( at http://www.ubi.com/us/support/default.aspx) from two assistants now. The first claimed that the on-disc version of QT would work (which is patently false) and the second told me to downgrade my OS. At what point does the desire to play a game I've purchased outweigh my desire to not break the law and download an emulator?

Cool 'quicktime.qts" File in "Riven Vista Patch"

paronomasiac,I had some luck with a file contained within the "Riven Vista Patch" downloaded from this website. You might want to try the whole patch. However, I had good luck by extracting the "quicktime.qts" file from this patch and placing it in the Myst Masterpiece folder (the one that contains the Myst app). No guarantees, though. Also if wanting to play Riven on the same machine, I found that the file needed to be duplicated and placed in the Riven folder as well. Although this process resulted in videos playing, sound was very noisy in both MME and Riven. But it might work better for you... here's hoping!

Note: if this works for video but sound is bad, maybe this UbiSoft Support site can help.

    Suggestion:

Lets go back a little and check if Quicktime was really deleted from your computer.

1- Go to the start menu and type "quicktime player" in the search box.
2- If any entry(ies) showup, click it (or them) to try to open quicktime player.
3- If one of them does open click the "help tab" + the About Quicktime line" on top-far right and find out which version it is showing.

There's also another possibility. Sometimes, when program installations fail or when programs are uninstalled, stray remnants are left in folders on the hard drive and/or in the Windows Registry. These remnants can cause problems by falsely indicating that a program is still installed, by causing improper access by other dependent programs via the Registry, or by causing installation failure of other versions of the same program.

The way to correct this situation is to:
-- First, use an uninstaller utility to remove the remnants.
-- Second, clean up the Registry with a cleaning utility.
-- Third, empty \temp and \temporary folders, Internet caches, and the Recycle bin with a hard drive cleanup utility.

My uninstaller preference is Revo Uninstaller Professional (30-day free trial), and my Registry utility/hard drive cleaner preference is CCleaner (freeware).

    Proceed as follows.
    -- a. Download and install:
    ----- 1. Revo Uninstaller Professional
    ----- 2. CCleaner
-- b. Reboot. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open programs.
    -- c. Start Revo.
----- 1. You'll see a page of the programs it finds. Double-click on the icon/list entry for QuickTime versions to uninstall, or click on the Uninstall icon on the top task bar.
----- 2. If you don't see any QuickTime icon/list entries, do a search for QuickTime, then remove whatever is found.
-- d. Reboot. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open programs.
    -- e. Start CCleaner
----- 1. Click on Options > Settings. Click on the "Secure Deletion - Normal file deletion (faster)" radio button to select it.
----- 2. Click on Options > Advanced. Click on the "Show prompt to backup registry issues" and "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours" boxes to select them.
----- 3. Click on Registry, and click on all of the boxes to select them.
----- 4. Click on Scan for Issues, allow the scanning process to complete, then click on Fix Selected Issues.
----- 5. Click on Cleaner (accept the default cleaning selections), then click on Run Cleaner > OK.
    ----- 6. Close CCleaner.
-- f. Reboot. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open programs.
-- g. Install and properly configure QuickTime.
