Is IL-2 Cliffs of Dover worth getting?

Hi guys, Father's Day is coming up as I'm sure some of you know. My Dad had played IL-2 1946 for quite awhile now, and I want to get him something more modern. So I was wondering, is Cliffs of Dover the right choice or is there something else? I would really appreciate your help! Thanks.

I think it's worth getting, but it needs a fairly powerful system preferably on Win7. See Cliffs of Dover System Requirements for details.

You might also consider Rise of Flight, a World War I combat flight simulation. It's free to download the basic game with a couple of flyable aircraft for each side, then you pay for additional aircraft. In development terms, it is more mature than Cliffs of Dover and less likely to suffer bugs. It also requires quite a lot of grunt in the computer running it, system requirements are on the page I've linked.

If by more modern you mean jets and/or helicopters, the DCS Series may be more suitable. There's also the Lock On: Modern Air Combat series which is not as new but offers some jet scenarios not covered by DCS.

So you would say it is an upgrade from IL-2 1946?

Yes, better graphics and better flight model, but without the 11 years of add-ons and still technically in development. As a result, the single player campaign is not yet as sophisticated, there are many fewer aircraft to choose from, many less missions to download and many less maps to fly on.

Which is why I mentioned it. It's not as new as CoD so the kinks have already been worked out. However WWI is not everyone's cup of tea so on the chance the OP's dad may prefer WW2 or later scenarios I"ve attempted to cover all bases

I've read there's now a Dynamic campaign for the game - is that official or a fan made mod? And how is the game these days - by the sounds of it, there were numerous problems early on - and how will the game run on my system?

    Awsome Gamming Experience

I just built a new system with all of the latest and best technology, and couldn't wait to try this one out...

After playing IL2 forrgotten battles with all of the addons... COD is without a doubt head and shoulders above the old stuff...

It's just like all of the rest of the new flight sims, it takes a lot post development to make the thing actually flyable...

I don't post to much any more as I've gotten so tired of these hardcore whiners.... I dosen't matter what the developres do there's just no satisfaction for some people..

Rise of Flight is also very good but there was the usual zombies that panned that one as well when it was first released... And how about Lock on when that was first released the stalkers were out in force and complained about everything..

Any way I like this one and I totally thing that's a keeper...

I think that we all know about flight sims the newer the game the higher the system requirements are.. If you can't fly it then you should stick to the older games or just forget about it....
