Exclamation Settlers 7 - Active Online Community?

Interested in getting Settlers 7 but before that I need to know whether or not the online community has survived for 2 years. Does the game use a match making system to set up matches or does it use lobbies? How long does it take to get a match going in a lobby or How long do I have to wait in a match making queue? Does the game give a count of how many players are online? If so, what is the average number per day?

Answers to these questions would greatly help me in making the choice to take the plunge.

I play a lot and I say yes there is an active online community.

There are two ways to play against other people.
    Multiplayer:
You can create or join a multiplayer match. The player creating the game chooses the map and can invite people from their contact list or just sit and wait for anybody to join. There is no way of knowing (as far as I know) how many multiplayer matches take place. I'm sure there are plenty.

    Empire:
Search for an Empire match. It is always a 4 player map with map and players randomly chosen by the servers. These matches are rated on the the leaderboard. There is an overall, monthly and weekly leaderboard. The week starts sometime Friday night and right now (about 1:30 am Tuesday morning) there are 664 players on the weekly board. Most have played more than 1 game and many (I counted at least 30) have played more than 10 games, several have played more than 20 games.

I think the experience of finding a game is different for me than for most people. I often have difficulty joining multiplayer games probably because of my location (Canada). Most players are in Europe. My Empire searches also tend to be very long. If I get a game in 30 minutes, that's good. Although I have had them start in 5 minutes. But many times I search for an hour to no avail. I can plainly see that others on my contact list search much more successfully.

The way to see how many players are online is to have many friends on your contact list. I have 104 on my list. Probably about half are no longer active. Probably about 30 play regularly. If I see 12 people on at once, (sunday afternoons my time) thats a lot of people on. Two hours ago there were 0 people on, Europe was asleep. Now I see 4, all from Russia I think. Very few players from North America. And it took me a long time to figure this all out, more than a year.

So I don't know what else exactly to say - hope this helped.
