Well, didn't the Prince come from a future in which the Sands of Time already exist? I guess he brings the Sands with him...

There is nothing official but I think that the monsters on the Island are infected by Kaileena herself, who we know is the esence of the sands of time.I guess she uses her powers to infect people and creat portals being the Empress and all of that. Notice how she uses sand-like energy to push Dahaka into the pit in the last fight and how she slows down time when you fight her. Those sands don't have to be THE Sands of Time the Prince opens in Azad but just Kaileena's "infecting" sands/ sand-like powers.

The prince arrives without any powers. As he travels around the island, he goes through many time warp portals.
I "rationalize" it thusly. As the prince travels through the Empress' sand portals, he gains the power to rewind and control time.
At least the game rewards the prince with such powers to make the game more enjoyable (and survivable.)

Jay, what does the link you posted have to do with the topic?

    SPOILERS FOLLOW:..

Kaileena IS the sands of time. She used her magic (ie the sands of time) to create the creatures you fight in the game, therefore they must have at least some of her essence. And that's what you collect (also may be the reason why they always respawn).

The hourglass isn't meant to be where she puts all the sands of time, it is her resting place, a container to hold her remains when she dies. That doesn't mean there can be no other sands beyond that.

Also, travelling through portals may be the trigger that activates the amulet's ability to contain and use the sands of time. Hope that makes sence and helps

    WRONG!
the creatures you fight in warrior within werent created by kaileena, they were once humans who probably lost their way at sea and ended up on the island and eventually kaileena infecting them with the sand making them become her servants.

note how the sand creatures in ww are different than the ones in SOT
    - for a start sand creatures in ww spew blood sometimes + they talk meaning they got PARTIALLY infected by the sands and not completely like the ignorant dumb zombies in SOT

I wouldn''t call that 'WRONG' so much as 'not quite'. Point being, she seems to have had something to do with them being what the were.
