    Overpowered Weapons? Question for Devs

I know that this is NOT A NEW VIDEO, but I was re-watching it today and I was kind of disturbed about one of the things Daniel Berlin mention about unlockable weapons. At around 3:00 he talks about the weapons you get from decoding intel and, as an example, he talked about a special AK that is "more powerful that the regular AK." In most games (balanced games at least) all the weapons have different strengths and weaknesses that players use to choose what works best for them (long or short range, rate of fire, damage vs. maneuverability, etc...). If there are guns in the game that are just plain "better" than others, there ends up being a lack of balance.

Are these just overpowered guns? Are there other factors about these special weapons that balance them out (lack of accuracy, short clip and slow reload time, etc...)?

I apologize if this has already been answered. I have been away for a while and I couldn't find anything searching the forum.

PS - Please don't flame. I know there are other factors that go into how balanced game is, but this is one of those issues that always bothers me. I don't complain about being out-played by people who are just better than me (I'm no MLG player), but I hate getting slaughtered by a team just because they have better equipment. It's just no fun.

    Dig it.

good point... Let's hope there is an option where special weapons are not allowed

You know where you are? ... Your in the jungle baby...... Your gonna die.....

    A good First-person Shooter should:

    - have precise, manual controls - e.g. no auto-aim
    - put balance, challenge and fun above realism
    - be full of fast-paced real-time action
    - let cunning, intelligence and skill decide who wins (PvP)
    - have simple mechanics: easy to learn but difficult to master

    Slim:
Just a quick note, I assume you mean Atlanta, GA, if so (there are other Atlanta's) we're virtually neighbors! I live in Lawrenceville and work in all over Gwinnett County.

Howdy neighbor! And yes, if its more than an accuracy improvement, that doesn't match reality. Reality dictates weapons are designed with maximum chamber pressures in mind. The only way to get a sizeable improvement in "power" is to increase the pressure (and therfore projectile speed) by using a finer-grained, faster burning powder which quite rapidly exceeds the built-in margins of safety. you could load a lighter bullet that will have a somewhat more devastating impact at short range, but its long distance energy-retention will fall off more rapidly than the original load.

I keep hoping for a game config checkbox to allow real-world exterior ballistics, its just not realistic to have projectile weapons that shoot like Lasers (no drop or windage). But I understand the majority of the players are in it for the arcade experience, and I'd hate for them to have to deal with reality until they're ready to do so. a checkbox would make everyone happy...

Yeah, I want bullet ballistics in Far Cry 3 more than a lot of things. :P And as for overpowered weaponry, I don't think you'll have to worry about it, Ubisoft is spending a lot of time into balancing weapons. And even if they don't get them right, they're probably gonna pay a LOT of attention to the community post-release, so if there's something off, a patch will probably be out within days.. Don't worry. They probably got it covered.

From the pic above - the radar is a new thing in MP in the FC series. I don't mind what weapons there are - if there is inbalance I'll simply choose the strongest weapon. But I really hope the radar can b switched off. I can't bear those things - sorry. It takes the stealth tactic out of gameplay. I'm not really into Arcade Games anymore so I might have to pass on the MP side of the game. I was hoping it would not have changed much from FC2.

The Gun Mods that you get from decoding Intel are more specialized weapons. They are indeed stronger than your regular weapons but the "weaknesses" of the weapon, like the ones you gave examples of, will also be significantly larger. These weapons are harder to obtain and therefore they should be more powerful but they're not overpowered in the sense that they only have godlike pro's and none of the drawbacks.

    Cheers

I like the fact of having a weapon superior to others especially if its rare, you should get the reward.
