I realize I'm in the minority when it comes to Star Trek fans and the new movie, but I really disliked JJ Abrams Star Trek and anything to do with it including video games. Now I am hearing they are going back to Khan for the next movie and it only confirms for me that new Star Trek is going in the wrong direction.
Even looking at it more objectively, I would still be very cautious because as you mentioned recent Trek games like Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek Online have been horrible or really mediocre. There really hasn't been a great Star Trek game in years. I would have to go back to Bridge Commander and before that, Elite Force. Of course, the best Trek games that were really true to the spirit of the series I feel were the old point and click adventure games with voice acting including Star Trek 25th Anniversary and the sequel Judgment Rites. Final Unity was the TNG adventure game. They really should go back and try to revive Star Trek adventure games now that they have come out with recent Sam and Max episodes and Back to The Future, but I really don't see that happening.
I agree!
However, when it comes to revamping something like Star Trek, there's only so many options. Look at Star Wars. Going back and giving the audience an understanding of how Vader came to be and how it changed the politics of the world. Same thing here.
As far as games are concerned, they have all been well....not so good, but with seeing a co-op between Spock and Kirk as well as a singleplayer mode (and who knows what else), I'm excited to see what they do with this. I have high hopes, but it's not something I'm banking on being a huge money maker. I'm assuming it will have a somewhat Mass Effect/ Dead Space type feel to it.
In my opinion, if someone were to make an MMORPG using Star Trek, they'd hit it right on the dot. Keeping that in mind, recent titles have attempted to do so, but with this one it seems they're reaching out to the action/adventure type and essentially using the characters the way we know them...even before the 2009 movie. Kirk is a fighter whereas Spock takes on science and reasoning.
Believe me, I'm just as skeptical as you are Shadows, but I'm crossing my Vulcan fingers!![]()

Well this is getting a longer than usual development time for a tie-in game (compared to...I think I read somewhere that Catwoman only got seven months), even though last I heard it's set between the first and second of the "new" Trek movies, so I'm hoping that it'll be good game (a good Star Trek game is a different story).

I loved the new Star Trek. I thought it was brilliant the way they worked the story so that they can go any direction they want with this franchise. I am really looking forward to the next one.
This game looks interesting. I hope its good but you never know. I will be checking it out for sure.
If it were up to me, I wouldn't have gone for a revamp of Star Trek at all especially in the way they did it. I would have tried to continue where DS9 left off with the state of the Federation after the war or keep the new Star Trek movie as is but with a new crew without screwing up our beloved TOS characters. In any case, I'm sure it's ok as the new Star Trek movie did exactly what Paramount wanted which was to appeal to new fans at the same time keeping old fans happy and it was a blockbuster hit.
A Star Trek MMORPG is a great idea, but again it would be a huge challenge to make it a good Trek game and to get people to play it especially in light of how Star Trek Online did and with all the recent competition in that genre on the PC. Did you by any chance ever get to play the older point and click Star Trek adventure games I mentioned? While they may seem very dated now, they really captured what Star Trek is all about especially when they would play out exactly like an episode would.

A Final Unity is maybe the most "Star Trek" out of all the games that are currently listed. Sure it followed a linear storyline, but there are some branching paths that effected the outcome of the "episode". Come on, it felt like a multi-parter. Judgement Rites is alright, but I felt there's something "off" about it.
Oh yeah, there was also Star Trek DS9: Harbinger. It's a first-person point n' click adventure with some shooting segments. I liked it for the most part. If there's another adventure game based on the "Prime" reality, take my money. Got a kickstarter? I'd donate to it. Which reminds me I should pledge for the Tex Murphy one.
I never got to play Final Unity back than but I wish I did. It was definitely a more polished and less linear Trek game. I really enjoyed Judgment Rites so to each his own. The ultimate Star Trek adventure game was supposed to be The Secret of Vulcan Fury, but sadly that game was cancelled. I actually have Star Trek DS9: Harbinger, but I got stuck and never went back to the game. I hear it's not as good either but probably worth playing through. Also, I still have the NES Star Trek 25th Anniversary game which had really subpar graphics, but was still so fun to play at the time.
I expected a lot from the game Starfleet Academy just for the part where you can play through the Kobayashi Maru scenario, but that was a very disappointing Trek game that didn't live up to expectations.
Yeah, I couldn't really hate on a Star Trek game, mainly because I didn't play one. Well...maybe Starship Creator: Warp II, which not the kind of game an arcade-y kid should play, I couldn't work the interface, but maybe since I'm older, I might understand it better. Also, I got the Limited Edition of Judgement Rites on clearance, so I couldn't really argue with that (I fondly remember the villain in the...third(?) mission to be a whiny brat XD), still have it in my bookshelf, along with the Collector's Edition of Star Trek Online (I can't believe I got it for 2.50. Then again, it already went free-to-play by then. I love the packaging for it.) The Final Unity is around somewhere, and I really like the manual, not too many "textbook" manuals these days, kinda sad. Oh yeah, I've played the Final Unity BEFORE Judgement Rites, so that might explain it.
Oh yeah, there was another "shooter" Star Trek game I remember playing, DS9: The Fallen. It was a third person shooter. I don't remember much about it, but I remember the real time shot of the DS9 was gorgeous at the time, I think they even recreated the opening, which shouldn't hard, since it's mostly shots of the DS9. XD
