How do we get these other than friends gifting them? Didn't they use to come from chopping down trees? I use to have plenty of planks all the time, but now I am down to one and can't seem to get anymore.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have no friends who play it, and I honestly don't feel comfortable adding people I don't know. So if there is a way, please let me know what it is, and if there is not, please make one...

Well, you are playing a game that is designed for a social platform, so I guess the makers assume that your friends play the same game as you, and if they don't you'll bribe them into playing and sending you planks.
(I have 3 neighbors that I found through this forum that never send me anything)

You can get planks by completing collections:
The weeds collection gives you 1 plank
The trees collection gives you 5 planks

So I suggest buying land, and start clearing

There may be even more ways, I'm a new player.
