So I'm on this map and I decided to destroy the demons first, but they seem to be invincible. I've defeated their heroes many times, but they always come back with just as powerful of armies in a few turns and every time i try attacking their city, I'm hopelessly wiped out, even though I can defeat their heroes outside of it with ease. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Check out CelestialHeavens.com. Great walkthrough there. With this one (and it's been long enough that I can't remember the order) there's an order to do things and it goes pretty easy and then there are several ways to do it and it goes quite difficult. Sounds like you found one of the difficult paths.
