    rcole_sooner's videos

I thought I'd post some videos. Maybe I can get some help on technique. Maybe I'll help some others.I decided one thread for all of them, instead of a bunch of threads.I figure I begin with the previous weekly challenge songs, since I got some practice on those. The easiest one first.I just got in, from golfing, so I got on my plaid shorts. LOL!

This is Deep Purple Smoke on the Water (combo).

Not perfect, but not bad, for in front of the camera. I am hoping doing this will help me get less camera shy too. That or make me give it up altogether. Na, I'm too hard headed, for that.

Here are some links to my other videos, in this thread.

    Little Barrie Surf Hell (combo)

Blue Oyster Cult (Don't Fear) The Reaper (combo)

Dan Auerbach I Want Some More (single note)

    Taddy Porter Mean Bi.tch (Combo)

    Muse Unnatural Selection (combo)

    Incubus I Miss You (combo)

The Strokes Under Cover of Darkness (combo)

The Black Keys I Got Mine (combo)

good stuff! I like this view, I was able to see that you use your fret hand, relieve pressure to mute the strings during the the riff after the main riff. I was worried that when I do that, it was wrong.

    how are you mic'd?

I got a lot of hardware, from when I tried to have a home studio. Most of it never gets used anymore, but some of it comes in handy for stuff like this.

I have an E-Mu audio interface, for my PC. You can see it in the top of this pic. I run the xbox to my TV with component video and analog audio. I run the audio out of my TV and into the E-Mu via a patchbay. You can see the red and black analog stereo cable into the patchbay, in the bottom of the photo. I recorded the video with my android smart phone, and the audio with Reaper. I use Windows Movie Maker live to merge the video and audio, overlaying the phone audio with the better directly recorded audio.

I wish I had some better video software, so I could do a pic in pic, and get clearer shots of the screen and my playing. But video software is expensive. The Movie Maker Live is free, but does not support split video or pic-n-pic, AFAIK.

Cool. Always nice to see folks getting vids of themselves playing online (double props for making your own guitar for the vid ). One of these days I'll throw one online.

Edit: The video said 100%, so I was assuming that meant 100% notes hit, but I think what you meant was "fully levelled". Either way, good run!

I don't want to hi-jack your thread but the audio sounds great!

I thought you could do video overlays with WMM. If I find how I'll let ya know.

Your fretting had is a little oddly angled, and you tend to do all your bar chords with two bars, which doesn't usually allow for clear arpeggios, but if it works for you; then that's what matters. The solo was good, but you tended to play relatively stiffly from string to string. Again, that might be your style, but learning to use those fingertips will give you much clearer sounds if you're playing clean or through a larger amp. What isn't noticed through small volumes are the minor noises other strings are making, then one turns up to '11' and says, "I played that perfectly, how come I'm hearing all these atonal overtones?"

I mess this song up constantly on Rocksmith, but I really don't care. The reason is simple: I've been playing it for almost 40 years, and I learned a lot of licks from other guitar players that I incorporated into how I play it. Therefore, I make 'mistakes' that I'm not willing to modify for the sake of the score.

That Tele is freaking beautiful!! Is that smalted Maple?

It took me a while on the 2 bars thing, but I got it. You mean instead of individual fingers (other than the index finger barre). I guess it depends on the chord, but it is probably just a lazy habit I have. Funny you mentioned it. I was watching, I think Cgeorg's video, and he did separate fingers. It does let one lift each finger slightly to kill each note, making the notes more succinct.

The stiff solo, is just lack of ability on my part. I'd need to practice it about 1000 more times to smooth it up. I also need a lot of work on scales. I need more time to practice all that stuff.

Yes, the tele is spalted maple, and speaking of time, building that tele is what I did with some of it. Here is the build thread.

Summers are tough, for me, because I also ride my bicycle and golf a lot. I like to be outside in the summers.

Ya know that audio jack in the phone thing, might be a cool way to do it. IDK if the phone video app supports that or not.

I'm tryin' to figure out how to get a better room angle for the videos. Mostly I do want the fretboard and TV screen visible. Better software would let me do all kinds of stuff.

LOL! Yeah, golfing ain't so bad, except for a few 3 day tournaments, that can take it out of me.

Bicycling on the other hand, is rough on my lazy rear. I just started biking about 5 years ago, and back then a 20 mile ride was an event, usually some sponsored ride. Now I do a 30 mile ride every Tuesday and try to get another 20 in on Saturday. The group I do the 30 with, does a 70 mile ride on Saturday, and I am not ready for that yet. Maybe next year.

I love being out in the sunshine.
