Why disable your Norton Internet Security before starting Myst Masterpiece Edition (MME)? Some of the less-well-behaved/excessively-invasive security software can silently (as in, it'll never tell you) cause strange problems with software. So, if you're having problems with the game, it's prudent to disable this sort of software before starting MME. And continue to do so until you can successfully play MME, but do NOT forget to re-enable after you're done playing the game!


Suggestions:

1. Install the latest driver package from AMD/ATI for your Radeon 6800-series video card. This is AMD Catalyst Software Suite Version 12.4, released 04/25/12, available here.
-- a. You don't appear to be running two monitors, but if so, take a look at the Hydravision package in Optional Downloads. (And if you are, disable - or better, disconnect - the second monitor before starting MME.)
-- b. Be certain to:
----- a. Read the Release Notes, before installing.
----- b. Install the updated driver package exactly as detailed in the Guide on how to install an ATI graphics card and / or its drivers. Don't just install the new package over the existing - that's almost guaranteed to cause problems!
-- c. MME can be picky as to where it's installed. You should consider at least temporarily installing MME to your C: drive. Plenty of free space, and you can always re-install to B: if that doesn't help.

2. Run MME as an Administrator. Right-click the Desktop MME icon or shortcut, then click on Run as administrator. For details, see How do I run an application once with a full administrator access token?.

3. Ensure that your permissions are set correctly. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the MME Program Files folder (e.g., C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition\).
-- a. Right click on the MME folder (e.g., \Myst Masterpiece Edition) > Properties > Security tab.
-- b. Click on Edit, and select the Users group.
-- c. Under Permissions for Users and in the Allow column, select Full Control by clicking on the box to put a check in it.
-- d. Click on Apply > OK.
-- e. Reboot, and start MME from a fresh boot as per steps 2 through 5 under "in general", above.

4. Uninstall MME, then use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter to re-install the game.
-- a. First, uninstall MME using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs utility. (See Uninstall or change a program for details.)
----- 1. If you can't find the Add or Remove Programs utility, see Turn Windows features on or off.
-- b. When uninstallation is complete, reboot, and re-install MME to your C: (preferably) or B: drive using the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. See Make older programs run in this version of Windows, "If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the troubleshooter...."
-- c. When re-installation is complete, reboot, and start MME by doing "in general" steps 2 through 5, above.
-- d. If MME doesn't start or play properly, again run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
----- 1. Try *all* of the modes under "Which version of Windows did this program work on before?"
----- 2. Or make compatibility setting changes manually.

Figures 2 weeks after building the system and the graphics card would have a major update waiting. That's been tended to. As for the security thing, just the auto-protect or the firewall, or both? I need these specifics before I go any further

If you're uncomfortable with disabling your anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, you can disconnect from the Internet, instead. (I don't recall that MME needs an active Internet connection.)
