    Pain in a Bottle - need suggestions

    OK, need some suggestions for how to play the riff in Message in a Bottle without causing severe wrist pain. What fingers are you using? I'm using my index finger, second finger and pinky and it's causing me a lot of wrist pain. Where is the best place to put your thumb on the neck for this kind of riff? Also, WTF with the slide on the stretched pinky - I don't have callouses on the side of my pinky!

    Maybe you should try some Painkiller before playing this one

    Yeah, I use my index, ring, and pinky for the riff, similar to this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5IRGLLNvoI

    Though in that vid the charting is slightly different, but same basic idea.

    Cool, I'll try using those fingers instead. It also looks like he is lifting up on the first finger to play the 2nd and 3rd notes. That should help too, but will make it harder to find my place.

    LOL pain in a bottle

    do you mean the main intro riff? if you use this key:
    ------
    (1) = index finger, (2) = middle finger, (3) = ring finger, (4) = pinky;

    regular numbers (1, 2 , 3, 4, not in "( )" ) = frets

    so 3 (1) would be the THIRD FRET, using INDEX finger to fret it

    String LETTERS to COLORS

    E (Thickest string) = RED
    A = YELLOW
    D = BLUE
    G = ORANGE
    B = GREEN
    e (Thinnest string) = PINK (to avoid confusion, i'll use a lower case "e")

    shift up= move hand position to higher on the fretboard (ex; from 3rd fret to 5th fret)
    shift low = move hand position to lower on the fretboard (ex; from 5th to 3rd fret)

    when i say "shift" i am talking about moving your index finger primarily, and your other fingers should naturally follow the ****

    IN OTHER WORDS-- if i say "shift up to 5th fret", and you had started playing on the 1st fret--

    when at 1st fret your hand position will be this: 1e (1), 2e (2) , 3e (3), 4e (4) : Index finger on 1st fret, middle finger on 2nd, ring on 3rd, pinky on 4th

    when at 5th fret your hand position will be: 5e (1) , 6e (2), 7e (3), 8e, (4)

    consider these NATURAL positions, so unless otherwise specified you should let your fingers fall into that "1, 2, 3,4" pattern based on where the index finger is

    ---------

    The Way I play it

    4A (1), 6D (3), ^[shift up] 8G (3),

    [shift low]
    5E (1), ^[shift up] 7A (1), 9D (3), (keep position)

    7E (1), 9A (3),
    ^[shift up] 11D (3)

    [shift low] 2E (1), 4A (3), ^[shift up slightly*] 6D(4) --> (slide) 7D(4) (sliding with your pinky readies your hand position)

    REPEAT

    -----

    that's how i do the combo 1 main riff, at least. i call it the "guitar hero" method because i did the same kind of shifting for the game before i learned to play real guitar

    I think you'd eventually want to play it without all of that shifting, otherwise you'll have a hard time not hearing 'sliding' noises when you won't on the actual song.

    Funk-n-Stein, here's another good vid to check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNR9W...eature=related

    You can probably do this one with either your middle, or ring finger, whichever feels more natural to you, I just happen to like using my ring finger for it.

    that's true, it's probably a bad habit to play it like that. it worked for mastering the song, but i should be more focused on better sound instead of getting that 100k
