I do not prefer 3 Doors Down, pop punk, contemporary country or Christian rock,
but your statement has something worth noting as it relates to the OP:

You state that a popular band is "terrible".
Now let us look at your top 5 favorite bands: it is highly likely that you can find scores of musicologists, composers and high-grade professional musicians that would declare with utmost certainty that your favorite bands are all terrible.
They may be able to back it up with sound evidence as to their terribleness.

My point is, music is like religion. Too many people think their musical tastes represent absolutes.
They are the chosen ones. If you don't like a band, they must be terrible. It is indeed about ego.

This goes for casual listeners, basement guitar players all the way up to classical composers. Ego and artistic elitism comes in all sizes.

As far as ego goes, I encourage everybody I can to learn guitar. And I never stop talking to my friends about Rocksmith, because one day somebody else will get it and I'll have somebody to play with.
Why does 3 Doors Down suck to you? Can you name one band that you like? I am curious about what you like.

I'll bite. Here are what I consider 3 of the best bands of all time: The Eagles, The Beatles, and Queen. There are others I rank highly, but those are the 3 I consider probably the most truly musically talented rock bands, comprising some of the most talented individuals, ever. I allow for the likelihood that others will have a different opinion. And, that's OK.

I steer away from saying that a band "sucks" simply because I don't like their genre or even that they suck simply because their genre is indisputably easy to perform. I don't even think most people who say "________ sucks" really even believe it themselves. I take that sort of a statement as being a sign of some sort of adolescent insecurity rather than a commentary on the musical ability of a particular band. And, I'd have to agree with a previous poster that it seems more likely that you'll hear such statements from fans of a specific genre more than any other. Why that is would be a great master's thesis for some aspiring psychology student, I'm sure.

I will, however, freely say that a band sucks if they don't show much in the way of originality or musical ability. My junior high school's band, for example, sucked. They were awful. Still, I'm sure a number of parents thought they were the sh*t.

This, however, is totally off the topic raised by the OP. . . The OP's point has more to do with guitar players saying that other guitar players suck. Which I'd have to agree is a purely ego-driven thing, driven mainly by the same sort of insecurities which drive certain fans of certain types of music to say that bands which don't play that particular style of music suck.

One to hold the bulb, the rest of the world to rotate around them.

How many guitar players does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None. That's the bass players job.
