Microsoft hires firm to focus test the concept of a console PC hybrid system.

The latest CNN/Money column reveals that Microsoft has hired a firm to focus test a few different ideas about making the next version of the Xbox (codenamed Xbox Next) offer PC-like features. According to the report B/R/S Group has been showing slides of an Xbox- PC hybrid and getting the opinion of focus group members about everything from pricing to features. The slides shown at one particular focus group session showed the "Xbox Next PC" concept, a videogame console with a built in hard drive, a full version of the Windows operating system, a DVD player with remote control, a CD burner, and Xbox Live installed.
The conceptual system would also support high definition television sets or monitors. One of the price points thrown around was $599. The concept was one of many shown to focus groups, according to the column. While the whole idea of a PC console hybrid might sound exciting, this focus testing doesn't mean that the aforementioned conceptual system is a planned reality. Microsoft is simply testing the warmth of the waters to see if it's a viable system amongst average consumers. Beyond that concepts tend to change drastically because of focus tending (or get scrapped altogether). But given Microsoft's focus on sharing PC and Xbox development tools and features, an Xbox Next PC isn't all that far-fetched.
