Ya, you're right. To be honest, I thought it was a great game at launch (I'm guessing we agree though that TOTE was better in every way). I only realized that the game had generated a lot of heat at launch when I read the forums. I should not have said terrible.

However, I've had the exact same thing happen with number 6. Of course I noticed many of the bugs (the griffens really frustrated me). But I still really enjoyed the game. I did not realize the amount of people who abhor the game until I, again, looked at the forums.

ToE was a very good game and it showed that Nival actualy knew how to do HoMM games.

If i remember right, most of the *****ing related to HoMM 5 at launch was due to the way the game looked(for some reason there were some ppl who rly hated the art style), some clunky animations and the way some of the units looked, oh and people cried their eyes out that the character's lips did not move during dialogues... i really laughed at that part. The story itself was good, much better than HoMM 6's story, there were no useless units(like the breeder) and the spells actualy felt powerfull. It's also funny that people complained about the dificulty of the game as if it was a bad thing that a TBS was hard on hard...

HoMM5 was at launch and remains incredibly unstable in multiplayer. It had some of the worst launch multiplayer of any game ever and would just outright crash most of the time you tried to play or disconnect your friends for no reason even over LAN. A heroes game is a long and complicated thing to produce.

The main problem with Heroes 6 seems to be that Ubisoft got overeager and put expectations and requirements upon Black Hole that were unrealistic given the time constraints. Had they given Black Hole more time or dropped certain requests H6 may have turned out much the better. As it stands, Heroes 6 is already permanently diminished for some of the bad design choices they made (Reputation, skill tree style/orientation, zones of control, only 3 resources, building trees, heal = resurrect available at level 1, Dynasty crap, conflux, artifact class/rep restrictions). However, it can still be salvaged. I wrote a post containing a lot of the changes they would have to make to begin balancing the game a while ago. Hopefully they listen.

But didnt Ubisoft say that the majority of HoMM players play the game in singleplayer(and i'l add hotseat here because that's how i've played it most of the time with my friends) ? And i dont know, i dont think i remember it's multiplayer beign as dead as HoMM6's is right now at the same point after launch. But yes you are right on what you said went wrong with HoMM 6 and again, like i said in almost all my other posts, i do agree that it can still be salvaged and i really hope it happens. I dont want this great TBS series to go the way Disciples did. As a side note, one thing i dont agree with you is the reputation feature, it's one of the few things i really liked about the game, and it reminded me of HoMM 4 where your class and look changed based on the way you built your character.

You and I seem to be on the same page quite a bit there Unicorn1844.

I'm 44 and like you have been playing each iteration of the game. My observations are the same. My reasons for playing is the same. And so are my disappointments.

I remain optimistic, however. I have enjoyed this vanilla version and look forward to expansions - hoping they have more factions, buildings and a great deal more maps.

What we can say is, they will be closer to the Heroes III town screens, they will be interactive, show all buildings and upgrades, and will be released in a future patch.
I wish I had known this. I wouldn't have played through the campaign until it was added. The current interface is really, really inefficient-- not just the town screens. Scrolling through heroes/towns is ridiculous. If I get arthritis from all the excess clicking I had to do to use the interface to play this game, I am suing Ubisoft for my medical expenses. What is with designers trying to make things minimalistic and actually making things less efficient? The flow of game play was completely neglected in favor of visual appeal and I don't get it AT ALL. I'm a graphic designer and even I know better. I guess it's because I'm lazy aka efficient above all else.

Also, I hope if there are new campaigns we see no more of the griffin family as the primary heroes. Whoever wrote the story line for 6 has a white (in this case human) savior complex.

That said, I still enjoyed the game and have a lot of hours in it and I hope any future installments vastly improve on such minor things that would greatly improve the flow of game play.

@ nosce: You list almost every new feature of the game as a "bad design choice". I thought some of the larger changes (zones of control and dynasty weapons especially) changed the game, but in a way that was very good. And when a lot of the art first came out, I was blown away by how it looked. I think you're mistaking your own opinion for a "bad design choice". don't get me wrong, I respect what you think of the game and everything, but it seems silly to simply write off changes in the tried-and-true formula of Heroes 3 as bad ideas.

Of course, I agree that some of them are kind of stupid. But I think better implementation would fix most of these problems. I think if you had a diverse and unique skill tree, independent factions (I mean, come on, I WANT to have thousands of skeletons running around), rebalanced spells a majority of the gameplay would be much better. Just my opinion.

Actually the Griffin family has been around for a long time on HoMM games. There are better and then there are worse story lines. The story line on the current iteration has its good points and bad points. My main beef with the current story line is the ending campaign. Most unsatisfactory.

Since i am replying to emirizilla, could you please change your avatar? I am really tired of looking at your crotch which doesn't interest me at all.

Thank you for continue to work on the developing of the game, even with all the constant discouragement of the fans haha... I'm sure the future of this game is bright and I think we should all support it in any way we can. They learnt from their mistakes and if they keep working on this it will be better... I actually love the game to be honest, but can't wait for the new things to come.

    Keep Going at ti!!
